Chapter 12 - THE WORDS HE COULD NO LONGER TAKE BACK
The recovered backup included draft emails, browser history, banking records, and a document titled MADISON STATEMENT.
The document was written two days before the attack.
I acknowledge that Aaron Hale transferred company funds without authorization. I falsely accused Douglas Hale because of personal resentment and grief following my mother’s death.
The wording matched what Douglas told Aaron to force me to admit.
It also included a sentence releasing Douglas from responsibility for all financial decisions made through Larkspur.
The prosecutor arranged a controlled meeting with all three of us present, each represented by counsel.
Douglas looked older without the authority of his house or business surrounding him.
Aaron sat across from him.
“You were going to report me,” Aaron said.
Douglas kept his eyes on the table.
“I was trying to preserve the company.”
“By calling me a thief?”
“Someone had to take responsibility.”
Madison looked at him. “You mean someone other than you.”
Douglas finally faced me.
“Your mother understood what it took to keep that company alive.”
“Mom spent years covering your mistakes.”
“She protected the family.”
“She protected your image.”
Aaron leaned forward.
“Why did you send me into her room?”
Douglas’s jaw shifted.
“I knew you could make her listen.”
“You knew I was angry.”
“I did not tell you to hurt her.”
“You gave me lies because you knew what I would do with them.”
The words hung between them.
Aaron wanted Douglas to accept enough blame to make him feel less monstrous.
Douglas wanted Aaron to remain the son who absorbed whatever consequences threatened the business.
I wanted both of them to stop using the other man’s choices as protection from their own.
“You planned the lie,” I said to Dad. “Aaron chose the violence. Both things happened.”
Douglas’s face hardened.
“You always did enjoy judging this family.”
“No. I spent years avoiding judgment because I was afraid of losing it.”
I stood.
“I’ve already lost the family we pretended to have.”
The meeting ended after Douglas refused to answer whether he had written the false emails.
