Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN THEY SAID WAS DEAD

Natalie Pierce was alive.
Investigators found her living under supervised care at a private psychiatric facility outside Tulsa.
For four years, she had been described as delusional and dangerous. Her medical file claimed she attacked her husband after becoming obsessed with the belief that his family wanted her property.
Carmen paid every bill.
Natalie’s former husband controlled the apartment building she inherited from her mother.
When Detective Brooks showed Natalie Sofia’s wedding photograph, she began crying.
“They did it again.”
Natalie said Carmen and three female relatives assaulted her after she refused to transfer the building. Her husband waited downstairs.
Victor Dane arranged for a physician to declare her unstable. She was transported across state lines before her friends understood she was missing.
The psychiatric facility accepted the husband’s guardianship documents without independently verifying the allegations.
Natalie had tried to escape twice.
Both attempts were recorded as proof of her illness.
Her testimony transformed the case.
Rachel Kim, another former bride, agreed to speak after learning Natalie had been found. Rachel said she signed over a restaurant to her husband after Carmen threatened her younger brother.
Emily Lawson’s death was reopened.
Her car had left a rural bridge months after she transferred a ranch to her husband. Investigators discovered the steering system had been repaired at a shop owned by Mateo.
Carmen’s family had built wealth by marrying women with property, isolating them and forcing transfers.
Sometimes through humiliation.
Sometimes through legal manipulation.
Sometimes through violence.
Javier requested a private meeting with Sofia.
He offered to testify against Carmen in exchange for Sofia supporting a reduced sentence.
“He wants you to rescue him from the woman he helped,” I said.
Sofia folded her arms around herself.
“I want to hear what he says.”
The meeting took place through protective glass.
Javier looked exhausted and frightened.
“My mother controlled everything,” he began.
Sofia did not respond.
“She chose you.”
“Did you love me?”
“Yes.”
“Before or after she valued my condo?”
His eyes dropped.
“I thought once the property was secure, we could leave.”
“You stood outside that room.”
“I begged them to stop.”
“You told them not to damage my face.”
Javier started crying.
“They weren’t supposed to go that far.”
Sofia leaned closer to the glass.
“How far were they supposed to go?”
He had no answer.
Then he offered information.
Carmen kept a private ledger documenting every property transfer and every payment to people who helped the family.
The ledger was hidden beneath the altar at the private chapel on the Robles ranch.
Police searched the chapel.
They found the compartment.
It was empty.
Someone had removed the ledger before the arrests.
Only one person outside the Robles family knew the location.
Victor Dane.
And according to airport records, Victor had boarded a flight to Washington, D.C.
Alexander stared at the passenger record.
Victor had purchased two tickets.

The second was under Elena Reed.
My name.
