Chapter 3 - THE HUSBAND WHO CALLED IT LOVE

Sofia asked to speak.
I wanted to refuse, but the choice belonged to her.
“What do you mean, come home?” she asked.
Javier released a slow breath, as though she were the unreasonable one.
“My mother was trying to protect our future. You panicked.”
“You stood outside.”
“I didn’t know they were hurting you.”
“I heard you.”
Silence.
Then he changed tactics.
“Sofia, you’re injured and confused. Your father is filling your head with things.”
Alexander’s jaw tightened, but he remained silent.
Javier continued.
“Sign the marital trust, and we can tell everyone this was a misunderstanding.”
Detective Brooks began recording.
Sofia looked at the bruises on her arms.
“And if I don’t sign?”
“You don’t understand what my family has invested in us.”
“I’m your wife, Javier. Not an investment.”
His voice hardened.
“You embarrassed my mother at her son’s wedding.”
Sofia closed her eyes.
There it was.
Not concern.
Ownership.
She ended the call.
Police traced Javier’s location to Carmen’s mansion in Highland Park. By the time officers arrived, the house was empty.
They found half-packed suitcases, burned documents in the fireplace and a laptop submerged in the swimming pool.
The family was running.
Alexander used none of his military authority to interfere with the investigation. Instead, he contacted a retired Army intelligence analyst named Marcus Hill, who now worked in financial compliance.
Marcus traced the companies connected to Mateo’s security firm.
Most were empty businesses.
One owned the Waxahachie ranch where Natalie Pierce had last been seen.
The ranch had recently ordered industrial cleaning supplies, new locks and enough food for several people.
Police obtained a search warrant.
They found no prisoners.
But they discovered three bedrooms with locks mounted on the outside.
Inside one closet were women’s shoes, damaged phones and unsigned property documents.
One phone belonged to Natalie.
The device had not been used in four years.
Sofia sat beside me when Detective Brooks delivered the news.
“I thought Javier loved me,” she said.
I held her carefully.
“He may have loved what he believed he could take.”
Alexander stood near the window.
Sofia looked toward him.
“You knew Carmen was dangerous.”
It was not a question.
Alexander turned.
“I knew the Robles family from an investigation years ago.”
My breath caught.
“What investigation?”
He had served as a financial-crimes liaison during an overseas assignment. One case involved companies laundering money through military housing contracts.
A Robles-owned construction firm appeared in the records.
Alexander helped prepare the evidence, but the case collapsed after a key witness vanished.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” I asked.
“I didn’t know Javier was connected until the wedding invitation.”
“You knew before the wedding?”
“I started checking him.”
Sofia slowly sat up.
“You let me marry him?”
Alexander’s face tightened.
“I found nothing I could prove.”
“You could have warned me.”
“Yes.”
The word fell heavily.
Before Sofia could answer, Detective Brooks received a message from the border authorities.
Carmen’s passport had been scanned at a private airport outside Dallas.
The flight plan listed Mexico.
Javier was not with her.
May you like
He was driving north.
Toward our house.
