Chapter 13 - THE RECORDS THAT COULDN’T LOVE HIM

After the confrontation, Heather agreed to give a sworn statement.

“I kept thinking loyalty meant protecting the company,” she told the bank investigator. “Then I realized the company was being used to hurt people.”

She provided production schedules showing that Derek’s administrator account released the false medical invoices for printing. Naomi’s account had designed the templates, but Derek approved each job.

The server provider preserved backups showing both users accessing Marianne’s scanned documents.

St. Anne’s billing compliance department confirmed through proper investigative channels that the specialists listed on Coastal Care Solutions invoices had never treated Derek there. Several names belonged to physicians practicing in other states.

The hospital visits themselves were real.

The deadly condition was not.

The credit union traced Marianne’s transfers into the shell company and then to Coastal Printworks, Derek’s personal cards, and the cash withdrawal used for the Cancún trip.

The former notary whose seal appeared on the power of attorney confirmed she had left Coastal Printworks eight months earlier and had never met Marianne.

One question remained: could Derek claim Naomi acted without his knowledge?

The answer came from Marianne’s compromised email account.

Digital access records showed Derek had logged in from the shop after Naomi created the power of attorney. He then sent himself a message from Marianne’s address stating that she had signed the document willingly.

The language was more revealing than the login.

I want my son to handle everything because illness has made decisions difficult for our family.

Marianne had never referred to herself and Derek as “our family.” Derek used the phrase whenever he wanted to exclude Gail or anyone else who questioned him.

The message tied his access, his wording, and Naomi’s document into one act.

Laura organized the evidence into a timeline for the bank, police investigators, and the attorney reviewing Naomi’s cooperation.

She also prepared a private proposal.

Derek could acknowledge the fraud, surrender remaining business records, agree to restitution from the shop’s liquidation, and stop challenging Marianne’s capacity. His cooperation would not erase potential charges, but it could prevent further losses and protect employees from being dragged through months of false claims.

Marianne read the proposal twice.

It was more mercy than Derek had offered her.

It was also the fastest way to stop him from harming anyone else.

Laura scheduled one final meeting.

When Derek arrived, the evidence packets were already on the table.

This time, there was nothing left for him to explain away.
