Chapter 14 - The Keys I Left on the Table

Beatrice pushed the keys toward me.

“Your daughters can sleep in their own rooms tonight.”

“They aren’t their rooms anymore.”

“They could be.”

Her voice softened in the way it had when Andrew was alive and she wanted him to mistake surrender for affection.

“I made decisions under pressure. The foundation depended on appearances. Donors want success stories, not complicated women who cry in meetings and question every condition.”

“So you made me disappear.”

“I gave you shelter.”

“You billed donors for a home you took from us.”

She looked toward the open ballroom doors.

“If the full report becomes public, the Hawthorne name will be attached to fraud. Your daughters carry that name too, whether you admit it or not.”

“They carried it when you put them beside the laundry room.”

Her mouth tightened.

I touched the keys but did not pick them up.

I wanted Windward Cottage so badly that my hand ached.

I wanted Andrew’s coffee cup above the sink, the marks beside the pantry door, and the bedroom window where Nora once waited for snow.

Beatrice understood longing as leverage.

Accepting the keys would teach her she had been right.

I slid them back.

“I won’t trade the truth for temporary permission to live in a house controlled by you.”

Her composure finally broke.

“What do you want from me?”

“Accountability that doesn’t depend on whether I forgive you.”

The board convened ten minutes later.

Beatrice was given a final opportunity to resign unconditionally, authorize the transition to Harbor Light, and cooperate with restitution.

She refused.

Theodore called the vote.

Board members who had defended her for years avoided her eyes as they raised their hands.

Beatrice was removed as chair and executive director.

Operational control transferred to Harbor Light pending regulatory approval.

Theodore stepped down as board chairman immediately afterward, though he agreed to remain available to investigators.

Rebecca submitted the complete evidence package to the labor department and attorney general.

Theodore’s archived email was included.

So was my hospital signature page.

Nothing had been edited to make any of us look better.

As the meeting ended, an investigator entered the ballroom with a formal demand for the foundation’s financial systems and property records.

Beatrice reached for the keys to Windward Cottage.

The investigator collected them first.
