The week before adoption finalization contained no dramatic revelations.
It contained signatures.
Medical-consent updates.
Birth-certificate requests.
Adoption-assistance agreements.
Life-insurance beneficiary changes.
A new will.
Temporary guardian nominations if something happened to Daniel.
School records.
Therapy releases.
Five separate conversations with age-appropriate explanations of what adoption meant.
Eli wanted to know whether Teresa would stop being his mother legally.
Daniel answered carefully.
“She will always be your mother. Adoption means I become your legal parent now because she can’t be here to do the job.”
“Will my last name change?”
“Only if that’s what gets approved and what we decide together.”
Eli wanted Nolan-Carter.
Maya wanted Carter because she liked how it sounded with her first name.
Jonah wanted whatever Eli picked.
The twins wanted crackers.
Daniel laughed for ten minutes after that.
Their family name did not need to be uniform to be real.
The county attorney’s office corrected the first-day placement record after Lawson asked that her inappropriate statement be formally noted in the file.
Daniel told her she did not have to do that.
“Yes,” she said. “I do.”
She had become one of the few people Daniel trusted precisely because she stopped pretending her role made her infallible.
Mara could not participate professionally in any of it.
She stayed outside the case.
That boundary protected everyone.
But on the evening before finalization, she came to Daniel’s house for dinner.
Five children crowded around the table.
Thomas joined by video call for twelve awkward minutes.
Mara washed dishes while Daniel packed court clothes.
She noticed the old photograph on the refrigerator.
The one that started everything.
“You kept it there?”
“For now.”
“Does it hurt?”
“Yes.”
“Then why?”
