Chapter 10 - THE CHILD IN THE PHOTOGRAPH HAD A DIFFERENT NAME
Six months into placement, Mara contacted Daniel again.
Not about the Nolan case.
About their own.
She had located Tommy.
His adoptive name was Thomas Reed.
He lived in Duluth, worked for a municipal water utility, and had no idea Daniel or Mara had been searching.
The twins were harder.
One record suggested they had moved out of Minnesota before kindergarten.
Daniel felt the familiar obsession wake up.
Search.
Call.
Fix.
He almost spent an entire Saturday following leads.
Then Maya developed strep throat, Lucy refused food, and Eli had his first school concert.
Daniel closed the laptop.
His past would have to wait for the children in his kitchen.
That night, Mara attended the concert.
Not as a social worker.
As Daniel’s sister.
She sat three rows behind him because neither of them knew what sitting together was supposed to mean yet.
Afterward, Eli recognized her from court.
“You’re the bracelet lady.”
Mara smiled.
“I guess I am.”
Eli asked why she had the same bracelet as the girl in Daniel’s picture.
Daniel looked at Mara.
They had never explained it to the children.
Mara crouched to Eli’s height.
“Because I was that girl.”
Eli looked from her to Daniel.
“Your sister?”
“Yes.”
“And you lost her?”
Daniel answered.
“Yes.”
Eli thought about that longer than any adult would have.
Then he asked the question Daniel had feared from the beginning.
“So you only took us because you wanted to fix what happened to you?”
The hallway suddenly felt very public.
Daniel could have denied it.
Instead he said, “That’s why I noticed what was happening to you so fast.”
Eli waited.
“But it’s not why I love you.”
“How do you know?”
Daniel looked at the crumpled concert program in his hand.
“Because loving you mostly feels like doing laundry and worrying whether you brushed your teeth.”
Eli laughed despite himself.
The question did not disappear.
But it changed shape.
Daniel’s motive had begun in trauma.
Parenthood required it to become something else.
That was the twist Judge Miller had sensed months earlier and the county needed time to test.
