Chapter 13 - WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MANSION

I sold the mansion three years later.
Not because Vanessa wanted it.
Not because Lily owned part.
Not because the kennel poisoned every inch.
Because maintaining it no longer made sense.
Lily was ten.
Noah was four.
The property was enormous for a family split across two households.
Claire’s trust attorney reviewed the transaction.
Independent valuation.
Proper allocation.
Lily’s trust received its appropriate share from Claire’s interest.
My share remained mine.
Nothing dramatic.
No secret deed.
No surprise inheritance.
Just a property sale handled correctly.
I bought a smaller house ten minutes from Lily’s school.
Four bedrooms.
Backyard.
No kennel.
Lily asked:
“Can we get a dog?”
I said:
“Eventually.”
She pointed toward a wooden shed behind the garage.
“Not one of those houses.”
“Deal.”
Noah visited according to the parenting schedule.
At first Lily became stiff around him.
Afraid every normal sibling mistake would become evidence again.
If he fell:
“Dad, I didn't push him.”
If he cried:
“I didn't do anything.”
That devastated me.
So we practiced something painfully simple.
Kids fall.
Babies cry.
Siblings annoy each other.
Not every moment is a case.
Eventually Noah ran toward Lily again without her flinching.

Their relationship survived.
That was the thing Vanessa had nearly destroyed while claiming to protect him.
