Chapter 7 - The Hospital Records Changed the Story

My recovery took longer because of the assault.

Not dramatically.

I did not return to surgery.

I did not suffer permanent injury.

My bruised shoulder made getting out of bed harder.

The strain across my abdomen turned a two-week discomfort into nearly a month of cautious movement.

That mattered.

Harm did not have to become catastrophic to count.

My surgeon extended my work restrictions.

The hospital social worker followed up because the person listed as my home caregiver had failed to appear.

I authorized release of relevant discharge records to my attorney.

The documents established a timeline Agnes could not easily reinterpret.

Wednesday, 9:14 a.m.:

hospital staff called Agnes.

She confirmed she was Maya Hale’s family caregiver.

Wednesday, 11:08 a.m.:

private nursing agency contacted Agnes to confirm Thursday start.

Wednesday, 11:31:

Agnes canceled.

Reason:

Family providing all support.

Wednesday, 1:26 p.m.:

meal service received cancellation request.

Reason:

Patient prefers family meals.

Thursday, 8:03 a.m.:

hospital discharge coordinator called Agnes again.

Agnes confirmed the home was prepared.

Thursday, 9:22:

$10,000 transferred to Chloe.

Thursday, 10:17:

furniture-store payment.

Thursday, 12:04:

interior-design deposit.

Thursday, 1:15:

Agnes texted Chloe:

Be home before Maya gets back. We need to settle this.

That last message came from Chloe’s voluntary production through counsel.

“Settle what?” Karen asked.

Chloe claimed she didn’t know.

I believed she partly didn’t.

Another message followed:

She cannot keep treating us like guests in Leo’s house.

The house issue again.

“What exactly did Agnes expect when I arrived?” I asked.

Leo stared at the timeline.

“Maybe she planned to confront you about asking questions.”

“With a pan?”

“I don’t know.”

The police investigator asked the same thing.

Agnes’s attorney advised her not to give us informal explanations.

Fine.

We stopped asking her directly.

The second evidence layer came from the house itself.

Agnes had managed vendors.

Cleaning.

Landscaping.

Repairs.

Catering for family dinners.

She had access to the household card because she handled those functions.

Leo’s assistant provided invoices.

Many were legitimate.

Some were not.

The most suspicious vendor was called Hartwell Home Consulting.

Twelve payments over eighteen months.

Total:

$38,400.

“What do they do?” I asked.

Leo shook his head.

The invoices said:

household organization,

furnishing consultation,

event support,

procurement coordination.

The address belonged to a mailbox center in Stamford.

Karen asked a business investigator to identify the company.

The owner:

Chloe Hale.

I stared at the page.

Chloe had registered the LLC eighteen months earlier.

“Did she tell you?”

Leo shook his head.

“No.”

The household had been paying Chloe through fake consulting invoices in addition to direct support.

Chloe’s attorney immediately rejected the word fake.

Some services had been real.

Chloe did help Agnes choose furniture.

Coordinate caterers.

Arrange flowers.

Plan two family parties.

The question was whether $38,400 reflected genuine services or disguised support.

Again, reality refused to be simple.

Then Karen found something more important than price.

Several Hartwell invoices had been approved electronically under Leo’s credentials.

“Did you approve these?”

He stared at the digital records.

“No.”

“Does your mother know your password?”

He closed his eyes.

“She did.”

Years earlier, when Malcolm’s estate paperwork overwhelmed Agnes, Leo gave her access to a family laptop where his password manager had been signed in.

He later changed most passwords.

Apparently not the household procurement portal.

Agnes had been approving payments in Leo’s name.

That crossed a different line.

It also gave her a stronger reason to fear my one question about the AmEx statement.

She was not worried I would discover generosity.

She was worried I would discover that she had begun manufacturing the appearance of Leo’s approval.
