Chapter 4 - Why Victoria Was in My Hospital Room

Victoria claimed she came to the hospital because Julian needed “a business witness.”

Nobody believed that for long.

Her lipstick was smudged.

Her lingerie was visible beneath an open coat.

Julian’s overnight bag contained a hotel keycard from a property three blocks from the hospital.

The hotel records would matter later.

At that moment, I cared less about the affair than Sarah expected.

Maybe shock protects us strangely.

I looked at Victoria and thought:

Of course.

Not:

How could he?

Of course.

The late dinners.

The suddenly protected phone.

The trips that ended a day later than necessary.

The way Victoria once addressed him as “Jules” in a board meeting and then pretended she had misspoken.

My marriage had been giving me answers long before I asked the right questions.

But Sarah saw a corporate problem.

She asked Victoria:

“Are you affiliated with Vance Strategic Management?”

Victoria’s face changed.

Julian stepped in.

“She doesn’t have to answer you.”

Sarah looked at him.

“I didn’t ask you.”

Eleanor scoffed.

“This is a hospital room, not a deposition.”

“No,” Sarah said. “Which is why I’m curious why you brought transfer documents here.”

Then she looked at me.

“Genevieve, do you want them removed?”

“Yes.”

Julian stared at me.

“You’re really doing this?”

I almost laughed.

After the slap.

The mistress.

The threats.

He still believed my response was the escalation.

Sarah called hospital security.

Julian became more careful immediately.

“I never threatened her.”

I looked toward the phone beneath my pillow.

Sarah did too.

“Good,” she said. “Then the recording will reflect that.”

Victoria swore under her breath.

That was when Julian saw the edge of my phone.

He lunged toward the bed.

Not at me.

At the pillow.

Sarah stepped between us.

A nurse entered.

Security arrived seconds later.

The phone remained where it was.

Julian backed away.

“Genevieve, don’t turn this into something ugly.”

I looked at Sophie.

Then at my husband.

“You brought your mistress into my recovery room with corporate-transfer papers.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“I’m not his mistress.”

Julian closed his eyes.

That was almost funny.

Sarah looked interested.

“What are you?”

Victoria said nothing.

Security escorted them out.

Eleanor left last.

She stared at Sophie.

Then at me.

“You’ll regret humiliating this family.”

I did not answer.

After the door shut, Sarah placed the sealed evidence bag on my blanket.

Inside was the brass corporate seal.

My father kept it in the executive safe for years.

“Why is this evidence?”

“Because somebody removed it from the corporate records room yesterday.”

“Who?”

“We don’t know yet.”

She opened her folder.

Vance Strategic Management had been formed four months earlier.

Registered in Delaware.

Its manager was Victoria Shaw.

There it was.

My husband had not planned to transfer control directly to himself.

He planned to transfer it into an entity controlled by his mistress.

“Why?”

“We’re still tracing it.”

Then Sarah showed me one more page.

Vance Strategic Management had already signed an agreement to purchase Blackwell Capital Partners.

The same company holding $4.8 million in Sterling Mercer-backed debt.

If I signed, Victoria’s company would acquire the debt vehicle.

My voting rights would move into Victoria’s management entity.

And Julian would effectively control both sides.

Sarah looked at me.

“This isn’t only about an affair.”

I knew.

May you like

My husband was trying to reorganize my father’s company around a woman I had never chosen.

And he believed childbirth had finally given him the timing.
