Chapter 9 - THE LIE REACHED THE PEOPLE AVIA COULDN’T CONTROL

The independent accounting took seven weeks.

There was no dramatic raid.

No prosecutor appeared at the front door.

There were spreadsheets.

Emails.

Bank statements.

Trust provisions.

Invoices.

And uncomfortable questions.

The preliminary findings were serious.

Avia had authority to make some emergency distributions.

She did not clearly have authority to convert a trustee advance into a personal loan obligation for Beck and Talia without appropriate approval.

Talia’s signature complicated matters.

So did Avia’s representations about why it had been obtained.

The accountants also found the trust reports had described the transaction inconsistently across different quarters.

The family’s bank froze further internal lending while counsel reviewed the matter.

Avia lost practical financial control.

That changed daily life more than anyone expected.

For decades, every Mercer called her about money.

Insurance.

Property taxes.

Trust distributions.

Major purchases.

College funds.

Suddenly nobody needed permission from Avia.

And Avia did not know who she was without that role.

She began calling Beck multiple times a day.

He stopped answering automatically.

Then Wren got sick again.

Nothing serious.

Another daycare virus.

Talia took her to the pediatrician herself.

Avia found out later.

“You should have told me.”

Talia stared at her across Beck and Talia’s front porch.

“Why?”

“I’m her grandmother.”

“Yes.”

“That used to matter.”

“It still matters.”

Talia paused.

“It just doesn’t make you her decision-maker.”

Avia’s face tightened.

For once she had no financial folder to raise between them.

The largest surprise came from Howard.

The accountant produced an old email from William Mercer written three months before his death.

It was addressed to Avia.

I need to tell Beck about North Row. This has gone too far.

Avia replied:

Not while he is rebuilding his firm. Let me fix it.

William:

It is not yours to fix.

Avia:

It became mine when you got sick.

Beck read the exchange.

His father had intended to tell him.

Avia stopped it.

That damaged the story she had been repeating.

I was honoring your father’s wishes.

Not exactly.

She had decided what his wishes should become after he died.

Rebecca called Beck later.

“There’s another email.”

“What?”

“Your father sent it to Peter Lang.”

Beck braced himself.

William wrote:

If I don’t get the chance, Beck needs the full records. He deserves the choice I should have given him from the beginning.

Beck leaned back.

Choice.

The one thing Avia had removed from everyone.

William from Peter.

Avia from Beck.

Avia from Talia.

And eventually Avia even tried to take Talia’s car keys while her granddaughter was sick.

The pattern was no longer about money.

Money was simply the tool.
