Chapter 6 - RACHEL THOUGHT I AGREED TO EVERYTHINGRachel came over Friday night.

No Ethan.
She brought two folders and a grocery-store envelope full of receipts.
“I’m not asking you to take this.”
She put $1,500 on my table.
“What is that?”
“Part of what Mom spent.”
“I said wait.”
“I know.”
“Rachel.”
“I need to do something.”
I understood.
So I let the cash sit between us.
Then she showed me texts.
Messages from Judith.
Claire says not to worry about baseball this year. She wants Ethan to have normal things.
Another:
Use the family card. Claire understands Lily has Daniel’s resources.
Another:
Don’t tell Claire every detail. She gets weird when money becomes emotional.
I almost laughed.
Mom had been creating confidentiality in every direction.
Not sophisticated.
Effective.
Rachel scrolled farther.
Then handed me the phone.
A message from me.
Three years earlier.
Two months after Daniel died.
Rachel’s car had broken down.
Jason had just moved out.
I wrote:
Please use Mom and Dad for whatever you need. I can cover extra. I literally cannot think about money right now. Just make sure Ethan is okay.
I stared.
There it was.
My permission.
Broad.
Emotional.
Temporary in my mind.
Open-ended in theirs.
“I forgot this.”
Rachel nodded.
“So did I, mostly.”
Mom didn’t.
“Did you think this still applied?”
Rachel looked ashamed.
“I thought you and Mom had some arrangement.”
“Why didn’t you ask?”
“Because every time I tried, she said you didn’t want money stuff between us.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Ironic.”
Rachel nodded.
Then:
“Claire, there’s something I need to say.”
I waited.
“I liked it.”
“What?”
“That Mom chose Ethan.”
My stomach tightened.
She started crying before she continued.
“All our lives, you were the one who had it together.”
“That is not true.”
“It felt true.”
I had better grades.
Left Tennessee for college.
Married Daniel.
Bought a house first.
Had Lily while Rachel was going through fertility treatment.
Then Rachel had Ethan two years later.
Then her marriage failed.
“Mom always compared us.”
I knew that.
But I had not known which side Rachel believed she occupied.
“When Daniel died, I thought everything would finally stop being a competition because it was so awful.”
She wiped her face.
“Then you still had the house. Insurance. Job. And I hated myself for noticing.”
I said nothing.
“So when Mom started giving Ethan more, some part of me thought…”
She stopped.
“Thought what?”
“That maybe he deserved to win something.”
There.
Ugly.
Honest.
“Did you know Lily was being hurt?”
“No.”
I believed her.
“If I had known, I would’ve stopped it.”
“I believe you.”
Rachel cried harder.
“I let the favoritism feel good because I thought it was only presents and baseball.”
That mattered.
Family systems survive because everyone gets something.
Judith got authority.
Frank got peace.
Rachel got relief.
Ethan got resources.
May you like
I got childcare.
And Lily paid the emotional cost no adult wanted to examine.
