Chapter 5 - THE FIRST THING CAROLINE STOLE

Whitmore Dental Group eventually responded to a subpoena.

Caroline had managed purchasing, payroll coordination, and vendor reimbursements across six dental offices.

The problem began with daycare.

Nathan’s commission income dropped sharply the previous year. Caroline quietly started using her corporate card for personal expenses she intended to repay.

First, a $780 emergency preschool payment.

Then groceries during a tight month.

Then summer camp.

Then the balance on a family credit card.

She entered the charges as office supplies, continuing education, or staff meals.

For almost a year, nobody noticed.

By the time an internal audit found them, the total was $19,387.42.

Almost exactly the amount borrowed in my name.

Whitmore terminated her immediately.

They offered a civil repayment agreement allowing her to repay the verified amount on a schedule while they reserved every right required by law.

Caroline panicked.

She believed a repayment agreement would follow her into background checks and destroy her chance of another management job.

So she and Nathan paid almost everything at once.

With my loan.

The major hidden truth had begun to surface.

The $19,400 was not money they borrowed because the children were hungry.

It was money used to conceal Caroline’s earlier misuse of someone else’s money.

One theft had been covered with another.

I met Denise in a diner near Sawmill Road.

“She kept saying she’d replace everything before the monthly reconciliation,” Denise said.

“Why didn’t she?”

“Because every month there was another emergency.”

That explanation sounded frighteningly familiar.

When Caroline was twenty-two and overdrew her account, I fixed it.

When she was twenty-seven and missed rent after a breakup, I fixed it.

When she and Nathan needed closing costs for their first house, I fixed it.

Different amounts.

Same lesson.

Mom would make consequences temporary.
