Chapter 1 - THE PHOTO HE COULDN’T LET HER KEEPJulian’s palm hit Elena before she had finished saying Victoria’s name.

Her cheek snapped sideways. Her shoulder struck the dark walnut dresser hard enough to rattle the champagne glasses sitting on top.
Her phone slipped from her fingers.
“You’re the problem,” Julian said.
Elena stared at the carpet where the phone had landed.
For twelve years, she had known how Julian looked when he was angry. His nostrils narrowed. His sentences became clipped. He rubbed the side of his thumb with his index finger.
She had never known how he looked after hitting her.
Calm.
That frightened her more.
Victoria Hale sat on the edge of Elena’s bed wearing a burgundy satin dress beneath one of Elena’s cream robes. She lifted her champagne glass and took another drink.
No apology.
No attempt to cover herself.
Just a look that told Elena this humiliation had been discussed before she walked into it.
Elena had returned early to their Belle Meade home because she had left the medication for a sinus infection in her bathroom.
She was supposed to be across Nashville at the Merritt & Cole annual development dinner for another three hours.
Julian knew that.
Victoria knew that too.
The photograph Elena had taken when she opened the bedroom door had been instinctive.
Julian beside the bed with his shirt open.
Victoria in Elena’s robe.
Champagne.
And behind Victoria, on the dresser, a blue folder Elena recognized immediately.
CONFIDENTIAL PROCUREMENT MATERIAL.
“Delete that photo,” Julian said.
Elena looked from him to the folder.
A temporary bidder credential lay beside it.
Victoria Hale — Procurement Consultant.
The badge should never have been inside this house.
Neither should the folder.
Elena reached for her phone.
Julian grabbed her upper arm.
“Don’t.”
“Let go.”
“You’re going to delete it.”
He shoved her backward.
Her hip and shoulder hit the dresser.
Pain shot through her side.
Victoria put down her glass.
“Julian.”
Not Stop.
Not What are you doing?
Just his name, spoken with mild impatience.
Elena looked at her.
“You brought company files into my bedroom?”
Victoria’s face tightened.
“Don’t make assumptions.”
“You’re wearing my robe.”
Julian moved between them.
“Elena, stop.”
She tried to get around him.
His shoe caught the side of her lower leg in a hard kick that knocked her against the dresser again.
Something inside Elena changed.
Not into courage.
Into clarity.
She had spent the last year wondering why Julian seemed to know details about the Cumberland House redevelopment that Elena had never discussed with him.
Why he asked which contractors were still competitive.
Why he complained that she had “forgotten who her family was” after she formally recused herself from his company’s bid.
Why Victoria had begun spending so much time with him at industry events.
Elena had explained each thing separately.
Now they were standing together in her bedroom.
So were the explanations.
She ripped her arm free and shoved Julian hard in the chest.
He stumbled backward.
“I already saved it.”
His expression changed.
Elena grabbed the phone.
Automatic cloud backup had already synced the photograph.
She checked.
There it was.
Julian saw the screen.
“Who did you send it to?”
Elena did not answer.
She looked past him at Victoria.
Victoria’s amusement was gone.
Elena raised the phone slightly.
The photograph contained more than two people betraying a marriage.

The blue folder was clearly visible.
And for the first time, Elena understood why Julian had been more desperate to destroy the picture than embarrassed to be caught in it.
