Chapter 1 - The Envelope Vanessa Tried to Hide

The dinner plate hit the cream floor, shattered, and sent pasta sliding across the stone-cream tile.
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
She jerked Maya’s dining chair backward so hard the seven-year-old stumbled and hit the edge of the sofa.
“Look what you ruined, you little brat!”
Maya’s eyes filled immediately.
Then Ethan came through the living-room archway.
He had barely dropped his keys before he saw his daughter crying on the floor and Vanessa still standing over her.
He crossed the room in two steps, pulled Maya behind him, and looked at the broken plate.
Then at Vanessa.
“She needed to learn,” Vanessa said without remorse.
Ethan stared at her for one beat.
Then he swept Vanessa’s handbag off the chair and pointed toward the front door.
“Touch my daughter again and you’re done.”
The bag hit the floor.
A deep-burgundy sealed envelope slid out, skidded through the spilled dinner, and stopped half beneath the edge of the rug.
Vanessa lunged for it so fast that Ethan noticed.
“Don’t touch that!”
Too late.
He blocked her with one arm and bent to pick it up.
Maya, still behind him, suddenly stopped crying.
Ethan felt her tiny hand clutch the back of his jacket.
She knew the envelope.
He turned it over.
It was thick, expensive, and addressed in dark ink.
Mr. Ethan Cole — Personal and Confidential
Vanessa’s confidence vanished.
Maya whispered, so quietly Ethan almost missed it:
“Dad… she said you could never see that.”
Vanessa took one step forward.
“Maya doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
Ethan looked at his daughter.
Her face had gone pale.
Then he looked back at Vanessa and understood something at once.
The spilled dinner had been an accident.
May you like
The cruelty after it had not.
And whatever was inside the burgundy envelope frightened Vanessa more than being caught hurting a child.
