Chapter 14 - THE LAST THING DAD WANTED ME TO SAYA year after the party, Richard's attorney contacted Rachel.

Dad wanted one thing.

A statement.

He had been invited to join the advisory board of a regional real-estate association.

The anniversary-party incident came up during screening.

He wanted me to provide a letter saying:

The incident arose from a private misunderstanding regarding a family gift and has been fully resolved.

I read it.

Then laughed.

Rachel asked:

“Want me to decline?”

“No.”

I called Dad.

First direct call in months.

He answered immediately.

“Natalie.”

“You want a letter.”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“The BMW wasn't a family gift.”

“We've moved beyond that.”

“Apparently not.”

His voice hardened.

“This affects my professional reputation.”

“I understand.”

“Then help me.”

There it was.

The same request in adult clothing.

Help me.

Give Britney the BMW.

Cover the project.

Protect the family.

Change the wording.

Absorb the cost.

“What do you want me to say that's true?”

Dad paused.

“That we've reconciled.”

“We haven't.”

“That I'm repaying you.”

“That is true.”

“That the situation was complicated.”

“Also true.”

“That I didn't intend to hurt you.”

I went quiet.

“Did you?”

“Of course not.”

“You yanked me to the floor.”

“I was trying to take the keys.”

“As if that's better.”

“Natalie.”

I could hear him losing patience.

Then he stopped himself.

That was new.

After several seconds:

“What will you say?”

I answered carefully.

“I’ll confirm that repayment is underway, that the legal matter has been resolved according to its terms, and that I have no role in deciding whether you should serve on their board.”

“That sounds cold.”

“It sounds factual.”

“They’ll think we're estranged.”

“We are.”

Silence.

Then the strangest thing happened.

Dad said:

“Okay.”

No explosion.

No insult.

Just anger he had to keep.

His own.

I sent a factual statement.

He did not get the advisory position.

I never learned whether my letter was the reason.

For once, I didn't investigate.

His career was no longer an assignment I had to manage.
