Chapter 1 - The Paper That Fell From His Pocket

Twelve hours after giving birth, Hailey could barely sit upright without pain.
Miles was sleeping in the hospital bassinet beside her when Cynthia stepped between them.
Everything happened too fast.
Cynthia slapped Hailey hard across the face.
Then she lifted Miles into her arms, keeping the newborn carefully swaddled against her chest.
“Your job is done. Hand over the baby.”
For one second, Hailey thought she had misunderstood.
Then Cynthia turned toward the door.
Hailey pushed herself forward despite the pain tearing through her abdomen.
“Give me my son.”
Trevor moved before she reached them.
His foot struck her hard enough to send her backward onto the hospital bed and against the raised mattress edge.
“You’ve done your part. Now get out.”
Hailey stared at her husband.
Not a stranger.
Not an attacker who had broken into her room.
Her husband.
The man who had held her hand through contractions.
The man who cried when Miles was born.
Cynthia kept walking.
Smiling.
Something inside Hailey snapped.
She lunged forward, slapped Cynthia across the face, and immediately pulled Miles back against her chest.
“You were trying to steal my son.”
Cynthia staggered.
Trevor reached toward them.
Then a folded paper slipped from his jacket pocket.
It landed open on the floor.
Hailey saw Trevor’s signature first.
Then the heading.
PETITION FOR TEMPORARY CUSTODY.
Her name appeared several times.
So did Miles’s.
Hailey slowly looked up.
Trevor didn’t look embarrassed.
He didn’t even look surprised.
“He was already ours before you even held him.”
The room went silent.
Cynthia’s mouth curled into a tiny smile.
Hailey stared down at the petition.
Then at her husband.
Then at the emergency call button beside the bed.
She pressed it.
Hard.
Miles remained against her chest.
Protected beneath both arms.
Within seconds, the hallway filled with footsteps.
A nurse entered first.
Then another.
Trevor immediately stepped backward.
Cynthia began talking.
Hailey barely heard her.
She focused on the nurse.
“My husband kicked me.”
The room changed.
The nurse’s expression hardened.
“And they tried to leave with my baby.”
Cynthia interrupted.
“That is not what happened.”
Hailey held Miles tighter.
“There’s paperwork on the floor.”
The nurse looked down.
Trevor finally seemed nervous.
Hailey understood why.
The document did not prove they already had custody.
It could not magically transfer a newborn away from his mother.
But it proved something else.
May you like
Trevor had been planning for a custody fight before Hailey even knew there was a marriage to escape.
And judging by Cynthia’s smile, his mother had known every step.
