Chapter 7 - THE WARNING HE CALLED DRAMA

Taylor returned after Lily fell asleep.

She wore no coat despite the mountain wind, as though she had driven over before giving herself time to change her mind.

They sat at Grant’s kitchen table. Between them stood Lily’s blue mug, filled with cocoa neither adult touched.

“The first time I caught Mom punishing her was in March,” Taylor said.

Grant waited.

“Lily wet her jeans after school. Mom said she was too old for accidents and needed to think about how much work she created.”

“What did she do?”

“She put Lily in the mudroom without her shoes.”

Grant’s stomach tightened.

“The outer door was latched. The heat wasn’t on. I found her sitting on the floor in socks, counting the squares in the tile.”

“How long?”

“Mom said two minutes. Lily said she got to four hundred.”

Grant looked toward the bedroom.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I did.”

He stared at her.

Taylor’s voice remained quiet. “You came home after an emergency furnace call. I told you my mother had locked Lily in the mudroom. You said I was exaggerating because I hated needing her.”

“I don’t remember that.”

“I do.”

“Why would I say that?”

“Because your business was failing, I was working nights, and Mom was the only person offering free childcare.”

Grant searched his memory. He remembered Taylor crying near the dishwasher. He remembered Evelyn calling Taylor ungrateful. He remembered saying that everyone needed to calm down.

“You said Mom was old-school,” Taylor continued. “You said not every uncomfortable experience was trauma.”

Grant leaned back.

“I didn’t know.”

“You didn’t want to know.”

Taylor told him she had confronted Evelyn and banned unsupervised visits. Evelyn apologized, cried, and promised it would never happen again.

Two weeks later, Taylor filed for divorce.

“You told everyone I left because you worked too much,” she said.

“Wasn’t that part of it?”

“Yes. But the real reason was that I stopped believing you would protect Lily if protecting her cost you something.”

Grant looked at the blue mug.

For years he had believed Taylor had abandoned the marriage.

Now he saw that she had been waiting for him to choose them.

And he had called the choice inconvenient.
