Chapter 8 - CLARA CANCELED THE WEDDING

Clara canceled it Thursday afternoon.

Forty-eight hours before the ceremony.

She did not announce the affair.

She did not mention Brittany.

She did not post the photograph.

The message sent through the wedding planner was six sentences.

The marriage would not take place.

Guests should cancel travel where possible.

Hotel reservations at Lenox House would be honored at the negotiated rate.

Gifts would be returned.

Clara requested privacy.

That was all.

Charles called within ninety seconds.

“Reverse it.”

Clara sat beside Naomi in the wedding planner’s office.

“No.”

“The board meets tomorrow.”

“Exactly.”

“Harlan Pierce will walk.”

“Maybe.”

“You are willing to risk twenty-eight hundred jobs because Trent slept with Brittany?”

Clara closed her eyes.

“Do you genuinely still believe that is what this is about?”

Charles went silent.

“You hid a company crisis from your board. You pledged trust assets I have a beneficial interest in. You let my fiancé participate in excluding me from financial decisions. And you expected marrying him to make the secrecy easier.”

“I was protecting the company.”

“You were protecting your control.”

Charles hung up.

Clara removed her veil that evening for the first time since the confrontation.

She had shoved it into Naomi’s guest-room closet without looking at it.

Now she folded it carefully.

Brittany appeared downstairs around nine.

Naomi let Clara decide.

Clara agreed to five minutes.

Brittany stood in the entryway.

“I saw the cancellation.”

“Everyone did.”

“Trent won’t answer me.”

Clara stared at her.

Brittany heard herself.

“Sorry.”

“Were you expecting sympathy?”

“No.”

Brittany looked exhausted.

“Dad says you’re destroying Whitmore.”

Clara laughed.

“You signed the trust acknowledgment.”

“I know.”

“You helped him.”

“I know.”

“So stop arriving at my door to report what Dad says.”

Brittany wiped her face.

“I’m scared.”

Clara softened despite herself.

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

“Specifics.”

Brittany took a breath.

“I don’t have your career. I don’t have Mom’s money. The foundation job comes through Dad. My apartment is owned by a family LLC. I have debt.”

Clara frowned.

“How much?”

Brittany looked ashamed.

“About two hundred and sixty thousand.”

Clara stared.

“How?”

“Cards. Travel. Clothes. Events. I kept thinking next year would be better.”

Clara suddenly understood another piece.

Brittany had needed Whitmore to survive too.

“Did Trent know?”

“Yes.”

“Did Dad?”

“Some.”

“Is that why you signed?”

Brittany nodded.

“Dad said if the company went down, all of us would feel it.”

Clara’s anger remained.

But the shape changed.

Brittany had not betrayed her sister because she woke up evil.

She had spent years living beyond her means inside a family system that made rescue feel permanent.

Trent offered validation.

Charles offered protection.

She traded honesty for both.

“You need your own lawyer,” Clara said.

Brittany blinked.

“You’re helping me?”

“No.”

Clara met her eyes.

“I’m telling you to stop using Dad, Trent or me as your plan.”

Brittany nodded.

She turned to leave.

Clara said, “Brittany.”

She stopped.

“The picture of you and Trent stays private unless I need it legally.”

Brittany’s face crumpled.

“Why?”

“Because humiliating you won’t unhumiliate me.”

Brittany walked out crying.

Clara closed the door.

The wedding was gone.

Now the family had to survive without it covering the financial problem.
