Chapter 1 - THREE DAYS AFTER THE WEDDING

Three days after Vivian Moore married Gregory Hale, he kicked their dining table hard enough to send lunch across the black marble floor.

The first plate hit beside Vivian’s bare foot.

The second shattered beneath a dining chair.

Lemon butter, shrimp, broken porcelain, and a bottle of sparkling water scattered across the condo she had owned for seven years before Gregory ever learned the elevator code.

Vivian didn’t move.

Gregory turned toward her.

His navy dress shirt was open at the collar. His face had gone red.

“Three days married and dinner’s late,” he said. “Maybe a wife needs a beating before she learns her place.”

Something inside Vivian became very quiet.

Lunch was twenty minutes late because she had spent the morning talking to her attorney.

Gregory didn’t know that yet.

He crossed the room.

“Why are you staring at me?”

Vivian’s phone was on the kitchen island behind her.

The secure upload had already started.

She had pressed the command fourteen seconds before Gregory kicked the table.

“I’m listening.”

He laughed.

“That’s new.”

The cruelty wasn’t.

Only the volume was.

Gregory had never hit her while they were dating.

He corrected.

Crowded.

Interrupted.

Took her wrist during arguments and called it getting her attention.

Once he punched the elevator wall after she went to dinner with a college friend without telling him.

He apologized the next morning and blamed work.

Vivian accepted enough apologies to arrive at a wedding.

Now he grabbed her wrist.

Hard.

“Starting tonight, your money, your passwords, and your body belong to me.”

His other hand lifted.

Vivian had spent six years competing in judo through college and several more training recreationally afterward.

She hadn’t competed in nearly a decade.

She also didn’t need to.

Gregory had already given her his balance.

He yanked.

She moved with him.

Turned her hips.

Trapped his arm.

Used his forward momentum.

Gregory’s expression changed half a second before his body did.

Vivian twisted.

He hit the marble face-down.

Hard enough to shock him.

Not hard enough to injure him seriously.

She followed him to the floor, one knee beside his ribs, his right arm controlled behind his back.

Gregory screamed more from humiliation than pain.

“What the hell—”

“Stop moving.”

“You crazy bitch!”

He tried to surge upward.

Vivian tightened the arm lock.

He froze.

Her phone sat three feet away.

She reached for it with her free hand.

Gregory twisted his head.

“You think this changes anything? You divorce me, you leave with nothing.”

Vivian looked down at him.

“You’re threatening the woman who can erase your title.”

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But she saw it.

Vivian unlocked her phone.

The condo security video was uploading automatically to the cloud account her attorney had helped her secure that morning.

Beneath it sat another folder.

GREGORY—VGM REVIEW.

Gregory saw the folder name.

He stopped breathing.

Vivian turned the screen enough for him to see the progress bar.

“The second you raised your hand, this video and your fraud file started uploading.”

Gregory lunged with his free hand.

Vivian pulled the phone away.

“What fraud file?”

Too fast.

Too frightened.

A man falsely accused would have asked what she meant.

Gregory knew there was something to find.

Vivian stared at him.

Yesterday morning she had thought she was dealing with a suspicious business document.

Now she knew she had married a man who was afraid of evidence.

The building’s concierge was already on the way upstairs after Vivian tapped the emergency button in her condo app.

Her lawyer had the files.

The video was safe.

And Gregory had just confirmed the one thing Vivian had not yet been able to prove.

Whatever was hidden inside VGM Procurement LLC was important enough for him to panic about while his face was pressed against a marble floor.
