CHAPTER 1
Three days after my wedding, my mother-in-law walked into my apartment like she owned it, poured hot stew onto my legs, and my husband looked at me on the floor and said I owed her an apology.
The lock beeped at 7:18 a.m.
I was standing in the kitchen in my white satin robe, cooking breakfast because I still wanted to believe marriage could feel gentle if I tried hard enough.
The door opened.
Linda Reynolds stepped inside carrying grocery bags and a steaming pot wrapped in a towel.
“Good morning,” she said, sniffing the air. “Though honestly, it smells like a cheap diner in here.”
I lowered the spatula.
“How did you get in?”
“With the code, sweetheart. Jake gave it to me.”
My stomach tightened.
“This apartment belongs to me. Nobody comes in without asking.”
Linda laughed like I had told a joke.
“Wherever my son lives, I can come and go whenever I please.”
Jake walked out of the bedroom rubbing his eyes.
I looked at him, waiting for him to say something.
Instead, he smiled.
“Did you bring breakfast, Mom?”
Linda opened my cabinets. My drawers. My refrigerator.
“Your things belong to my son now,” she said.
“No,” I answered. “They don’t.”
The room went silent.
Linda turned too fast, and the pot tilted.
Hot stew splashed across my legs.
Pain ripped through me. I fell backward, gasping.
Jake rushed forward.
Not to me.
To his mother.
“Look what you made her do!” he snapped.
I stared at him from the floor, shaking.
Linda’s mouth curved slightly, almost satisfied.
My legs burned. My eyes filled with tears.
But across the room, my gaze landed on the locked drawer of my desk.
Inside was one document Jake had laughed at before the wedding.
One document Linda never knew existed.
And as my husband demanded I apologize, I realized something cold and clear.
May you like
They had not married into my life.
They had walked into a trap built by their own greed.
