Chapter 3 - WHAT DAVID KNEW

Julian recovered before the others.
People like him rarely stayed humbled for long.
“A controlling share doesn’t mean she can run a defense company,” he said. “She has no executive experience.”
Rebecca closed the case.
“Mrs. Vance has served anonymously on Vanguard’s technical board for three years.”
“An anonymous board member?”
“Her work required federal identity protection.”
Chloe looked at me with open resentment.
“So all this time, you were rich?”
“That’s what you heard?”
“You watched Mom and Dad struggle while hiding millions.”
Dad quickly seized on it.
“She’s right. We took you in when David deployed.”
“You asked me to move here because Mom wanted help managing your finances.”
“We gave you a home.”
“You charged me three thousand dollars a month.”
Mom’s face tightened.
Chloe looked at her.
“You said Clara was living here for free.”
I almost admired how fast their alliances cracked.
“The mortgage payments I made are documented,” I said. “So is the eighty thousand dollars I gave Dad when the construction company nearly failed.”
Julian turned toward my father.
“You told me that money came from a private investor.”
Dad ignored him.
“That was a family loan.”
“You never repaid it.”
“Because we assumed you understood what family meant.”
“Last night, it meant a camping cot beside motor oil.”
My father stepped closer.
Two security officers moved subtly between us.
His anger faltered.
“Call them off.”
“They’re doing their jobs.”
“I’m your father.”
“And I am eight months pregnant.”
I held his gaze.
“You put me in an unheated garage the night I buried my husband.”
For the first time, he looked embarrassed.
Not sorry.
Embarrassed because witnesses were present.
Rebecca handed me a sealed envelope.
“There is one matter we should address before departure.”
I recognized David’s handwriting across the front.
For Clara—after the transfer is complete.
My hands began trembling.
Colonel Maddox looked toward the house.
“Would you prefer privacy?”
“No.”
I broke the seal.
The letter was only two pages.
David wrote that he had become concerned during his final month about unauthorized attempts to access Vanguard’s procurement systems. The attempts had originated from an outside consulting firm.
Mercer Strategic Solutions.
Julian’s company.
I read the name twice.
“What did you do?”
Julian’s expression stayed controlled.
“Nothing.”
Rebecca removed a file from her case.
“Your firm submitted six fraudulent access requests using Mrs. Vance’s family address and personal information.”
Chloe turned toward her husband.
“Julian?”
“It was a vendor application.”
“It was attempted credential theft,” Rebecca said.
Dad’s face reddened.
“That is a serious accusation.”
“It is supported by federal logs.”
Julian pointed at me.
“She gave me access to the network.”
I stared at him.
“I never discussed Vanguard with you.”
“You left your laptop open.”
“My laptop locks if I step three feet away.”
His silence lasted too long.
Chloe’s voice became thin.
“How did you get her information?”
Julian looked toward Mom.
That one glance exposed her.
My mother stepped back.
“I didn’t know what he planned to do.”
I felt something inside me go cold.
“What did you give him?”
“Only copies of household documents.”
“Which documents?”
“Your tax forms. Some old military paperwork. The identification page from David’s secure travel file.”
Colonel Maddox’s expression changed instantly.
“You copied a restricted military document?”
Mom started shaking.
“Julian said he needed proof of family connections for an investor.”
Chloe stared at her.
“You stole from Clara’s room?”
“I was trying to help your husband.”
The truth rearranged the entire previous night.
Chloe and Julian had not moved into my bedroom because he needed an office.
He wanted access to the secure equipment stored there.
My parents had sent me to the garage so Julian could search without interruption.
David had suspected it.
That was why he had changed my device protocols before his final trip.
That was why his letter instructed Vanguard security to retrieve me immediately after the ownership transfer.
He had not only left me the company.
He had been protecting me from my own family.
Julian backed toward the house.
“This is insane.”
Colonel Maddox nodded toward the security team.
“Do not enter the residence.”
“You can’t order me around on private property.”
“The Defense Criminal Investigative Service is already en route with a warrant.”
Chloe’s knees seemed to weaken.
Dad looked at me in panic.
“Clara, stop this.”
“I didn’t start it.”
“You can tell them this was a misunderstanding.”
“Mom copied restricted documents. Julian attempted to breach a military contractor. You put him in my bedroom to finish the job.”
Dad’s voice dropped.
“We were trying to save the family.”
“Which family?”
May you like
I held David’s letter against my chest.
“Because you were willing to sacrifice me without hesitation.”
