Chapter 2 - THE BRIDE HAD PLANNED EVERYTHING

The ballroom erupted.

Guests crowded closer while others raised their phones. Bridesmaids whispered behind their hands. Hotel employees stood frozen near the doors, unsure whether they should call police or protect the wedding.

Ethan watched the video twice.

In the footage, Vivienne did more than stain her gown.

She opened Mara’s gift bag, removed the cream card, and tore it into pieces.

Then she took a bottle of red decorative dye from a makeup case and poured it onto a spare napkin.

She pressed the stained fabric against the front of Mara’s navy gown when Mara had been surrounded in the corridor.

That explained the matching crimson mark.

“This isn’t real,” Vivienne said.

Her voice shook.

“The hotel cameras don’t record inside dressing rooms.”

Dante lifted one eyebrow.

“Most do not.”

Lorraine moved between him and her daughter.

“Who gave you permission to access private footage?”

“The person who owns the hotel.”

The room quieted again.

Lorraine looked toward the hotel manager.

The manager lowered his eyes.

“Mr. Moretti acquired the Halston Grand six months ago.”

Vivienne went pale.

Her wedding had been built inside a property owned by the one man she had not expected to attend.

Dante turned toward Ethan.

“Untying her should have been your first decision.”

Ethan dropped the rope.

“I believed my fiancée.”

“You believed the version that required no questions.”

Mara rubbed her wrists.

The skin was red and swollen.

Dante saw it.

“Do you want the police?”

Vivienne stared at her.

“Mara, don’t.”

It was the first time she had spoken without performing for the room.

“Why?” Mara asked.

“Because this is family.”

“You tied me to a pillar in front of two hundred people.”

“I didn’t tie you.”

She looked quickly at Ethan.

He recoiled.

“You told me she attacked you.”

“I was upset.”

“You said she threatened you with the broken cake knife.”

Mara’s head snapped toward him.

“What knife?”

Ethan looked from Vivienne to the scattered cake.

“She said you followed her downstairs and threatened to cut the gown off her body.”

Vivienne had not merely accused Mara of ruining a dress.

She had turned her into a violent woman in a room full of witnesses who had never seen what happened.

Lorraine stepped closer to Mara.

“Your cousin panicked. She has been under enormous pressure.”

“Pressure from what?”

“The wedding. The family. Ethan’s parents. You know how people compare the two of you.”

Mara laughed once.

“You mean the way you compare us.”

Lorraine’s expression hardened.

“This is not the time to rewrite your childhood.”

“No. It’s the time to stop pretending it did not happen.”

Ethan removed his boutonnière.

“Vivienne, why would you do this?”

She looked around the ballroom.

Every person she had invited to admire her was watching.

“Because she was going to ruin everything.”

Mara stared at her.

“I arrived twenty minutes before you tied me up.”

“Not today.”

Vivienne’s eyes filled with furious tears.

“You have been ruining everything for years.”

“By doing what?”

“By making everyone look at me and wonder why I wasn’t you.”

The confession landed harder than shouting.

Lorraine grabbed her daughter’s arm.

“Stop speaking.”

But Vivienne had crossed the point where humiliation could still be controlled.

“She got the scholarship. She built the company. Grandma left her the lake property. Even Ethan’s father asked why her firm wasn’t designing our new house.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You told me Mara refused the project.”

“She would have made it about herself.”

“She never knew about it,” Mara said.

Dante closed the knife and slipped it into his jacket.

“There is more footage.”

Lorraine turned sharply.

“What more?”

“Mrs. Bellamy entered the security office at seven this morning.”

Mara looked at her aunt.

Lorraine’s face became still.

Dante played another recording.

Lorraine stood inside the hotel security room beside the assistant manager. She handed him an envelope.

He disabled two corridor cameras and erased a twenty-minute segment from the main system.

What Lorraine did not know was that Dante’s properties used a second encrypted backup after an insurance fraud case the previous year.

“You helped her,” Mara said.

Lorraine lifted her chin.

“I protected my daughter.”

“From a crime she invented?”

“From another day that would somehow become about you.”

Mara looked at the woman who had raised her.

For years, she had told herself Lorraine’s cruelty came from divided loyalty. She believed her aunt had loved her but could not bear seeing Vivienne feel less successful.

The truth was simpler.

Lorraine had never considered Mara a daughter.

She had considered her a threat living inside the family.

Dante offered Mara his phone.

“The police are waiting outside.”

Vivienne looked toward the ballroom doors.

“You called them already?”

“The moment I saw a woman tied to hotel property.”

Ethan stepped away from his bride.

“The wedding is over.”

Vivienne’s face collapsed.

“You don’t mean that.”

“You framed an innocent woman and convinced me to restrain her.”

“Because I was afraid you would choose her.”

Mara blinked.

Ethan looked disgusted.

“I barely know Mara.”

“That never stopped you from admiring her.”

Vivienne turned toward Mara.

“You walked into every room and made me disappear.”

Mara’s voice remained steady.

“I spent half my life making myself smaller so you could feel larger.”

May you like

Police officers entered the ballroom.

“I’m done disappearing for you.”
