Chapter 1 - THE LINE UNDER HER CHIN

Mrs. Henderson lifted Chloe’s ponytail with one hand and tilted the little plastic water cup with the other.

“Her throat is perfectly clear,” she said, sounding more irritated than concerned. “She knows this gets her sent home.”

Chloe recoiled so hard her sneakers scraped against the exam-table paper. She clamped both hands around her neck and started crying again, those breath-catching, terrified little sobs that never sounded like ordinary school tears.

Rachel dropped to her knees beside the table.

“Don’t touch her hair again.”

The nurse frowned. “Mrs. Bennett, I’m trying to examine her.”

“My daughter said it hurts to swallow.”

“She’s been in here three times this week for the same complaint.”

Rachel looked up sharply. “Three times?”

Before Mrs. Henderson could answer, Chloe jerked away again. Rachel reached up instinctively, knocked the nurse’s hand off Chloe’s ponytail, and pulled her daughter against her side. The water cup tipped over and spilled across the open health log on the counter.

For one second, everyone froze.

Then Mrs. Henderson, defensive now, leaned in more carefully and lifted Chloe’s hair from beneath her chin instead of from the crown.

Rachel saw it too.

A narrow dark line.

Not on the front of Chloe’s throat, but running up from beneath the sweater collar and disappearing under the soft curve of her jaw.

Mrs. Henderson stiffened.

“It’s probably marker,” she said too quickly. “Or some kind of necklace stain.”

Chloe didn’t wear necklaces to school.

Rachel grabbed the gauze pad from the tray, wet it at the sink, and wiped one edge of the line.

Nothing came off.

Chloe winced when she swallowed.

Mrs. Henderson stared.

Rachel saw the change on the nurse’s face before she heard it in her voice. The impatience was gone.

Rachel slammed the wet health log shut beneath Mrs. Henderson’s hand and pulled out her phone.

“You saw her three times,” Rachel said. “Write down exactly what you ignored.”

Mrs. Henderson lifted Chloe’s hair higher, more carefully now, and the dark line continued under her chin instead of fading. Her plastic water cup slipped from her hand and hit the linoleum floor.

“That isn’t marker,” she said.

The lunch bell rang out in the hallway.

Chloe went rigid.

Her hand shot out and grabbed the sleeve of Rachel’s dark-green sweater. She pointed silently through the open door toward the cafeteria corridor.

Mrs. Henderson turned first.

Then Rachel followed Chloe’s gaze.

Scott Bennett—Rachel’s ex-husband, Chloe’s father—was standing in the hallway beside Principal Walden, holding a visitor badge and talking like he belonged there.

The moment Chloe saw him, she stopped crying.

That frightened Rachel more than the tears.
