Chapter 6 - WHEN THE SCHOOL DECIDED ARIANA WAS THE PROBLEM AGAIN

By Friday, rumors had escaped.

Not the full investigation.

Only the hallway fight.

Someone posted that Ariana had “used martial arts” on Victoria Hale.

The phrase spread without context.

Ariana watched students glance at her hands as though they were weapons.

At lunch, two boys reenacted the redirect movement and laughed.

Victoria did not attend classes.

Her parents claimed she was emotionally distressed.

Ariana attended every period.

Because scholarship students rarely got to disappear when emotionally distressed.

Then the first parent email reached Hawthorne.

Concerned that a trained fighter had remained on campus after physical aggression.

Another followed.

Then six.

None mentioned Victoria’s shove.

Ariana sat outside Ms. Parker’s office while adults debated whether she should be temporarily sent home for “community stability.”

Her Taekwondo coach, Master Hanley, joined by video.

“She used the minimum movement necessary to disengage.”

One trustee asked:

“Would an untrained student have been able to do what she did?”

Master Hanley stared at the camera.

“That is like asking whether a trained swimmer should be blamed for not drowning.”

Ariana almost smiled.

The school allowed her to remain.

But the damage had begun.

Then Dana’s history with the Hale Foundation leaked.

A parent wrote anonymously that Ariana’s family had “a longstanding grievance against the Hales.”

Victoria returned Monday.

Students surrounded her.

She wore no visible injury because there had been none.

Still, people asked whether she was okay.

Nobody asked Ariana about the project Victoria destroyed.

That afternoon Victoria cornered her near the library.

“You enjoying this?”

Ariana kept walking.

Victoria followed.

“You made my family sound corrupt.”

“I haven’t spoken publicly.”

“My mother says your mom has hated us for years.”

Ariana stopped.

“Your mother knows who my mom is?”

Victoria’s face changed.

Slightly.

There it was.

“My mother worked for your foundation before we were born.”

Victoria looked away.

Ariana stepped closer.

“How does your mother know her name?”

“Everybody knows everything now.”

“No.”

Ariana’s voice lowered.

“She knew before this.”

Victoria said nothing.

Ariana felt the mystery narrowing.

The folder had not been created by some abstract consultant choosing Ariana randomly.

Someone inside the Hale family knew exactly who Dana Cole was.

That evening Ariana confronted her mother.

“Did you ever contact the Hales after you left?”

“No.”

“Did you contact Hawthorne about them?”

“No.”

“Did you threaten them?”

“No.”

“Then why does Victoria’s mother know you?”

Dana’s face changed.

Ariana saw the answer before hearing it.

“Mom.”

“Three years ago, Allison Hale called me.”

Ariana stared.

Victoria’s mother.

“What did she want?”

May you like

Dana sat down.

“She wanted me to stop you from applying to Hawthorne.”
