Chapter 12

I did not announce the lawyer.
I announced the boundary.
That evening, when Linda let herself in without knocking, I was waiting in the kitchen.
Ellie was upstairs with Joanne, who had agreed to stay through dinner.
Ben came in behind his mother carrying takeout, as if we were all one normal family and Friday had been a misunderstanding.
“Ellie doesn’t see Linda alone again,” I said.
Linda blinked. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
Ben set the food down too hard. “Rachel, don’t start.”
“I’m not starting anything. I’m ending something.”
Linda folded her arms. “You are making a fool of yourself over apple juice.”
“No,” I said. “I’m making a rule over deliberate cruelty.”
Ben’s face shifted just slightly.
He knew.
He knew I knew more than he thought.
“You need to leave,” I told Linda.
Her mouth fell open. “From my son’s house?”
The lie was automatic now.
“From mine.”
Ben stepped forward. “Mom’s not going anywhere.”
Joanne entered from the hallway at that exact moment and said, “Actually, I think she is.”
I had never loved my sister more.
Linda rounded on her. “This is family business.”
Joanne smiled without warmth. “Then maybe stop abusing the youngest family member.”
Ben looked stunned. He had not expected witnesses on my side.
That mattered.
People like Ben depend on emotional geometry. They count on the target being isolated enough to seem unreasonable.
Instead he was outnumbered.
For once.
“Mom,” he said finally, not to me, “maybe give us a minute.”
Linda looked at him as if he had slapped her.
Then she grabbed her purse and left with enough offended dignity to imply she was the victim of a coup.
The front door closed.
Ben turned to me.
“You brought your sister in to gang up on me?”
I almost laughed.
“You brought your mother in to terrorize our child.”
He stared.
Then his voice dropped. “If you are planning something legal—”
There it was.
I answered carefully. “I’m planning to protect Ellie.”
He gave a short, humorless laugh. “From who?”
May you like
I held his eyes.
He stopped smiling.
