“Six weeks before the wedding, he locked the door for his mother while she tried to rob me, not knowing I had already prepared for betrayal.”
CHAPTER 1
I slowly raised my leg and pressed the hidden panic button under Margaret’s side table.
Neither Ethan nor his mother noticed.
They were too busy staring at my purse.
The tiny button had been installed two months earlier, when Margaret insisted I pay to upgrade her “outdated” home security before the wedding. She said wealthy guests would be coming in and out of the house, and she wanted everything to look respectable.
I paid for the cameras.
I paid for the alarm.
I paid for the silent panic system.
And now, standing in her lavish living room with my back aching and both hands wrapped protectively around my pregnant belly, I realized that the only useful thing I had ever bought for that woman was evidence.
Margaret leaned close enough for me to smell her expensive perfume.
“Hand over the card,” she hissed. “And don’t test me again.”
Ethan stood in front of the locked door, arms crossed, eyes cold.
Six weeks before our wedding, the father of my unborn child had chosen his mother’s greed over my safety.
My voice came out shaking, but clear.
“You’re trying to rob your own grandchild’s mother.”
Ethan scoffed. “Stop being dramatic. We’re family now. Your money is our money.”
That sentence broke something open in me.
For months, I had ignored the warning signs because I wanted my baby to have a father. I had forgiven Ethan’s unpaid bills, his failed startup, his empty promises, his mother’s constant demands.
But that locked door told the truth.

They did not want a family.
They wanted access.
