Chapter 1 - THE MAN THEY SENT AWAY

“Sir, with that sleeping child and those damaged flowers, you may want to try a cheaper motel down the road.”

The words struck Ethan Vance harder than the January wind outside the revolving doors.

Not because he could not afford the Grand Regent Chicago.

Because his family owned it.

His six-year-old daughter, Lily, slept on his left shoulder, one hand wrapped around the ear of her gray stuffed bunny. In his other hand, Ethan carried bent red roses and a worn brown duffel from their delayed flight out of Denver.

Behind the marble desk, Patricia Lane gave his leather jacket another dismissive glance.

“I have a reservation,” Ethan said. “Under Ethan Vance.”

Her fingers tapped the keyboard for four seconds.

“Nothing.”

“It was booked through the corporate office. Check the executive block.”

Karla Whitcomb, standing beside the counter in a beige blazer, smiled at Patricia.

“The executive block?”

“My daughter needs a bed,” Ethan said. “Check again.”

Lily shifted against him. Ethan supported her legs and waited.

Patricia searched a second screen. Her expression tightened.

Karla leaned closer. “That suite isn’t for people like you.”

Patricia stopped typing.

The lobby’s gold chandelier reflected across the marble floor. A few petals clung to the roses’ brown wrapping.

Then Patricia found the reservation.

Her face lost color.

Ethan set the flowers on the counter.

“Repeat what you just said.”

Karla’s arms slowly unfolded.

Before she could answer, a housekeeper emerged from the service corridor carrying folded towels. Her name tag read Lupita Hernandez.

She looked at Lily, then at the women behind the desk.

“Ms. Lane,” she said carefully, “the executive reservations are under the secondary corporate tab.”

Karla turned on her. “Go back to your floor.”

Lupita did not move.

“A tired child shouldn’t be standing in a lobby because somebody didn’t want to check twice.”

Patricia reached for the desk phone with an unsteady hand.

Ethan watched her press the internal number for the general manager.

“Tell him Ethan Vance is waiting,” he said. “And tell him not to warn anyone before he comes down.”

Patricia stared at the reservation screen.
