Chapter 7 - The Door Opens

The slap froze the mansion.

Isabelle’s head turned from the impact. Her hair swung over one eye. Her cheek burned bright beneath the chandelier light.

Someone gasped.

Someone whispered, “Margaret.”

Alexander moved at last, grabbing his mother’s wrist after it was already too late.

“What the hell are you doing?” he said.

Margaret pulled her hand free, shaken by her own loss of control but too proud to retreat.

Isabelle touched her cheek.

For three seconds, she almost broke.

Not because of the pain.

Because of the little girl inside her who still wanted love to choose her loudly.

Alexander looked horrified, but horror was not protection.

Elaine’s smile had vanished.

The black jewelry box trembled in Margaret’s hand.

“Don’t make a scene,” Margaret said.

The words landed like a confession.

Isabelle lowered her hand.

Her tears stopped at the edge of her eyes.

“You already did.”

Then she turned and walked away.

No shouting.

No begging.

No final speech.

The silence was worse for them.

Her heels clicked across the marble floor, each step cutting through the stunned room. Guests parted without speaking. The tall wooden double doors opened wider as if the house itself wanted her gone.

Cold night air wrapped around her shoulders.

Alexander followed three steps behind. “Isabelle, please wait.”

She stopped at the top of the stone steps but did not turn around.

“Did you know she was going to do that?” Isabelle asked.

“No.”

“Did you know she was going to humiliate me?”

Silence.

That answer hurt more.

Isabelle nodded once.

Then she walked down the steps.

The driver opened the sedan door. Isabelle slid into the back seat, her white satin dress gathering around her knees like spilled moonlight.

Only when the door closed did she let her breath shake.

Her phone lit up.

Nora.

Isabelle answered.

Outside, Alexander stood halfway down the steps, tuxedo jacket open, face pale in the blue night.

Behind him, Margaret and Elaine appeared in the mansion doorway. The warm light framed them like people still pretending they had control.

Nora’s voice came through the phone.

“Are you safe?”

Isabelle looked at the mansion.

“Yes.”

“Do I send it?”

Isabelle’s fingers tightened around the phone.

She could still feel Margaret’s hand on her skin.

She could still see Alexander frozen in the foyer.

She could still hear the room waiting for her to collapse.

Instead, she said, “Send them the recording.”

Nora did not ask twice.

Inside the mansion, phones began buzzing one after another.

Alexander looked down at his screen.

Margaret looked at hers.

May you like

Elaine went completely still.

And from the driveway, Isabelle watched the first crack of fear open across Margaret Whitmore’s face.
