Chapter 3 - The Call That Changed Everything

Daniel disappeared slowly.
That was the cruelest part.
He didn’t vanish all at once.
He called less.
Visited less.
Answered texts with shorter replies.
At first, Claire blamed pressure. His father had been sick. His family business was struggling. His mother kept demanding he come home for meetings and dinners and “responsibilities.”
Then one night, Emily answered Daniel’s phone.
Claire had called because she was bleeding.
Not a lot.
But enough to terrify a woman ten weeks pregnant and alone.
Emily’s voice came through soft and controlled.
“Daniel is busy.”
Claire sat on the bathroom floor, one hand pressed against her stomach.
“I need to speak to him.”
There was a pause.
Then Emily said, “Claire, you need to stop doing this.”
“Doing what?”
“Making yourself part of his life.”
Claire’s fear turned cold. “Where is he?”
“With his family,” Emily said. “Where he belongs.”
Daniel called back three hours later.
By then Claire had already gone to the ER alone.
The baby was okay.
Claire was not.
Daniel arrived after midnight, pale and panicked, still wearing a suit. He apologized. He swore Emily had no right to answer his phone. He held Claire’s hand and cried against it.
For a few weeks, she believed him again.
Then came the envelope.
No return address.
Inside was a check for fifty thousand dollars and a typed note.
For medical expenses. Please do not contact Daniel Carter or his family again.
Claire stared at it until the numbers blurred.
When Daniel came over that night, she threw the envelope at him.
He looked genuinely horrified.
“I didn’t send this.”
“Then who did?”
He didn’t answer fast enough.
That was answer enough.
His mother knew.
Emily knew.
Everyone knew except the people Daniel was too afraid to face honestly.
Claire told him to leave.
He begged.
He promised he would fix it.
He said he loved her.
She asked one question.
“Will you tell your family tonight?”
Daniel looked at the floor.
And Claire felt the future close in front of her like a locked door.
“No,” she whispered. “You won’t.”
The next morning, she packed what little she owned and moved to her aunt’s house in Vermont.
Daniel called forty-seven times in one week.
Then seventeen times.
Then three.
May you like
Then none.
Claire gave birth to Noah seven months later with her aunt holding one hand and Daniel’s name left blank on the birth certificate.
