Chapter 1 - The Chair She Pulled Away

Vivian yanked Claire’s chair backward just as Claire reached for her water glass.

The chair legs scraped across the walnut floor.

Before Claire could understand what was happening, Vivian shoved a stack of greasy dinner plates into her arms.

“Guests sit,” Vivian said. “You clean.”

She pointed toward the kitchen.

Not joking.

Not smiling.

Ordering.

Claire stood there in her cream dress with gravy cooling against the edge of one plate while Vivian calmly lowered herself into Claire’s place at the dining table.

Around them, Ethan’s relatives suddenly became fascinated with their coffee cups.

Uncle Rob looked away.

Cousin Megan gave an uncomfortable little laugh.

Nobody told Vivian to stop.

Claire’s cheeks burned.

She and Ethan had spent almost four months helping Ethan’s mother, Ruth, recover from major hip surgery. Claire had cooked, driven Ruth to physical therapy, organized medications, changed sheets, handled groceries, and stayed up twice when Ruth’s pain medication made her sick.

Vivian came by when it suited her.

Yet somehow Claire was the one being treated like hired help.

She carried the plates toward the kitchen.

Vivian snapped her fingers behind her.

“Wait.”

Claire turned.

Vivian pushed a heavy serving tray toward her.

“And wipe the counters when you’re done.”

Something inside Claire went strangely quiet.

Then the front door opened.

Ethan walked in carrying his work bag.

He saw Claire.

Saw the dishes piled against her chest.

Saw his sister sitting in Claire’s chair.

His expression changed.

“What’s going on?”

Vivian leaned back.

“Dinner’s over.”

Ethan crossed the room, took every plate from Claire’s arms, and slammed them onto the table in front of his sister.

“She’s my wife.”

Vivian’s eyebrows rose.

“Congratulations.”

“Clean your own mess.”

Nobody laughed this time.

Ethan took Claire’s hand.

He grabbed her coat from the back of another chair.

Vivian stood.

“Oh, please. She’s been doing this for months.”

Ethan stopped.

Claire did too.

Vivian folded her arms.

“She knows the arrangement.”

Claire turned slowly.

“What arrangement?”

For the first time that evening, Vivian looked uncertain.

Cousin Megan stared at Claire.

Then she said the sentence that changed everything.

“Wait... you mean you’re not getting paid?”
