"She served her father-in-law dinner in the dog’s bowl and told him a useless old man didn’t deserve a plate, while his own son sat there crying in silence because his wife controlled every dollar in the house."

CHAPTER 1

Brittany placed the dog bowl in front of Howard like she was setting down a verdict.

The dining room went so quiet that Eric could hear the ice shifting in his own water glass.

Howard sat at the end of the table in his faded gray cardigan, the one he wore even in summer because his hands had been cold since the surgery. He looked at the stainless steel bowl, then at the untouched dinner plates in front of everyone else.

For a moment, nobody breathed.

Brittany smiled without warmth.

“Since you sit around all day doing nothing,” she said, “this should be good enough for you.”

Eric flinched as if the bowl had struck him.

His father did not move. Howard only lowered his eyes, pressing his lips together the way he used to when he was trying not to embarrass someone else with his pain.

That hurt Eric more than anger would have.

Across the table, Brittany’s phone lit up beside her wine glass. A message from her contractor. Another bill. Another decision she had made without asking him.

Eric opened his mouth.

Brittany turned her head slowly.

“Don’t start, Eric,” she said. “You know exactly whose money keeps this family standing.”

The words landed harder than shouting.

Eric shut his mouth.

His eyes burned. His hands gripped the table edge until his knuckles turned pale.

Howard looked at him then. Not with accusation. Not with disappointment sharp enough to defend himself.

Only sadness.

That was worse.

Eric whispered, “I’m sorry, Dad.”

Howard gave the smallest nod, as if forgiving his son was easier than watching him become a stranger.

Then he gently pushed the dog bowl away.
