Chapter 8 - The Room Turned Against Him

Richard tried to leave before the police arrived.

That was the final embarrassment.

Not the fall.

Not the recordings.

Not the forged signatures glowing on the television screen.

The final embarrassment was watching a man who had spent years calling himself the head of the family stumble toward the foyer while his own relatives blocked the doors.

“Move,” he said.

No one did.

Peter Bellamy stood calmly with one hand raised. “Sit down, Richard.”

“You have no authority over me.”

“No,” Peter said. “But the officers outside will.”

Margaret sat rigidly in the cream chair, face ashen, her burgundy dress suddenly too formal for the disaster around her.

Elaine was not there.

Claire thought of that strangely in the middle of everything. Elaine Mercer, Richard’s favorite “family friend,” had not attended brunch. That meant she had either been smarter than Margaret or more involved than Claire knew.

She would deal with that later.

For now, Claire sat on the marble floor with Eleanor, one arm around her shoulders.

“Are you hurt?” Claire whispered.

“My pride, maybe.”

Despite everything, Claire let out one small broken laugh.

Eleanor touched Claire’s wrist. “I’m sorry.”

“No,” Claire said immediately. “No, Mom.”

“I pushed too hard.”

“You told the truth.”

“I watched you disappear in this house.”

Claire’s throat closed.

Eleanor’s eyes filled. “That was the part I couldn’t stand.”

Before Claire could answer, Richard shouted from across the room.

“This is insane! You’re all letting her manipulate you!”

He pointed at Claire now.

“There she is. Saint Claire. The perfect daughter. The victim. You wanted this. You wanted my family to turn on me.”

Claire looked at him for a long moment.

Then she stood.

Not quickly.

Not dramatically.

She helped Eleanor into the nearest chair first. She adjusted the purple cardigan around her mother’s shoulders. She checked her hands. She made sure she was safe.

Only then did she walk toward Richard.

The room watched.

Richard’s face flickered with something Claire had mistaken for strength for years.

It was fear.

“You’re right about one thing,” Claire said quietly. “I did want your family to see you.”

His jaw worked.

“And now they have.”

The doorbell rang.

Two officers stood beyond the tall front doors, sunlight sharp behind them.

Peter opened the door.

Richard looked around the room one last time, searching for rescue.

Margaret looked away.

That was when Richard finally understood.

His power had never come from being loved.

It came from being protected.

And protection, once withdrawn, leaves a person standing exactly as they are.
