CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2 — WHAT VICTORIA WANTED

Victoria had not always been this careless.

When she first entered the Harrington house, she was careful with every word. She brought flowers for Eleanor. She complimented the curtains. She asked me how long I had worked there and smiled like the answer mattered.

Back then, she was engaged to Daniel Harrington, Eleanor’s only son.

Daniel was kind, but tired in the way men become tired when they have spent their whole lives trying not to disappoint a powerful family name.

Victoria learned that quickly.

She learned where Daniel was soft.

She learned where Eleanor was lonely.

She learned which rooms held the important files.

Within a year of the wedding, Victoria had taken over the house calendar, the charity board, the household accounts, and Daniel’s phone whenever he was in the shower.

Within two years, she had convinced Daniel that Eleanor was “declining.”

“She forgets things,” Victoria would say softly over dinner.

Eleanor did not forget things.

She remembered too much.

She remembered Victoria telling a decorator to throw away Mr. Harrington’s old reading chair.

She remembered Victoria calling Daniel’s childhood photos “clutter.”

She remembered Victoria locking the study drawer after Mr. Harrington’s lawyer visited.

But every time Eleanor spoke up, Victoria smiled and said, “See? This is exactly what I mean. She gets confused when she’s emotional.”

Daniel never knew what to believe.

And I was just the housekeeper.

That was what Victoria counted on.

People like her always counted on the quiet ones staying quiet.

Then, one evening, I found a folded document inside the trash bag from the study.

It was torn in half, but not enough.

I saw Eleanor’s name.

I saw Daniel’s signature.

I saw a line that said Victoria would receive temporary authority over household assets if Eleanor was declared medically unfit.

And at the bottom, I saw something that made my stomach turn cold.

A signature line for me.

Rosa Bennett.

Witness.

May you like

I had never signed anything.

Victoria had planned to make me part of her lie.
