Chapter 6 - MY BROTHER ASKED ME TO COME ALONE

Kyle chose a twenty-four-hour diner off Interstate 40.
Mara drove me and waited in the parking lot. Detective Alvarez sat two booths away wearing jeans and pretending to read emails.
I had agreed to meet only after Kyle sent the evidence to the detective first.
He looked worse than I expected.
His beard had grown unevenly. His expensive watch was gone. A bruise darkened the edge of his jaw.
“You look like Dad,” he said when I sat down.
“Don’t use him to soften me.”
Kyle lowered his eyes.
“I deserve that.”
“You told people I attacked her.”
“I know.”
“You filmed me on the ground while my baby was losing oxygen.”
His face tightened.
“I didn’t know she would hit you.”
“But after she did, you protected her.”
“I was trying to keep her talking.”
“That is what you’ve been telling yourself?”
He reached into his jacket and placed his phone on the table.
The recording from the baby shower was not ten seconds long.
It was forty-seven minutes.
Kyle had begun filming before the guests arrived. In the footage, Eleanor paced near the outdoor fireplace and demanded that he help pressure me.
Kyle asked questions that sounded supportive.
What if Claire refuses?
How much do you need?
What happens when the bank calls again?
Eleanor answered all of them.
She admitted taking money from both trusts. She admitted forging my medical documents. She said she needed the donation box because “once Claire deposits those checks, the bank will know she’s perfectly capable of controlling an money from both trusts. She admitted forging my medical documents. She said she needed account.”
Kyle had known an audit was coming.
Two weeks earlier, men connected to an illegal sports-betting operation confronted him over his debt. Desperate, he searched Eleanor’s office for property documents he could use as collateral.
Instead, he found the forged trust records.
“I went to a lawyer,” he said. “She told me not to confront Mom. She told me to document everything and contact the bank.”
“You could have warned me.”
“If Mom knew I had turned on her, she would have destroyed the files.”
“You used my shower as an investigation.”
“I thought she was going to yell. I thought she would threaten you and I’d record it. I never imagined—”
“You saw her pick up the poker.”
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
“You had time to put your phone down,” I said. “You had time to step between us.”
“I froze.”
“No. The guests froze. You made a decision. You kept filming.”
Tears gathered in his eyes.
“I spent my whole life doing what she told me. Even when I knew it was wrong, I waited for her to tell me who to blame. That day, I finally saw what it cost.”
He slid a flash drive across the table.
It contained bank statements, forged letters, recorded conversations, and photographs from Eleanor’s office.
“Why help now?” I asked.
“Because she told me Lily’s early delivery was useful.”
My body went still.
Kyle’s voice dropped.
“She said the hospital records would support the claim that you were unstable. She wanted me to tell CPS that you threw yourself down on purpose.”
I could not speak.
Kyle covered his face.
“I told her no.”
“One no does not erase a lifetime of yes.”
“I know.”
I left the flash drive on the table for Detective Alvarez.
As I stood, Kyle whispered, “I loved you, Claire.”
I looked at the brother who had shared my childhood and betrayed my adulthood.
May you like
“You loved me quietly,” I said. “She harmed me loudly.”
Then I walked away.
