Chapter 4 - The Police at the Door

Officer Daniel Hayes stopped at the courtyard entrance with one hand near his radio.
Behind him stood Officer Mark Reeves, younger, stunned, trying to understand how a wealthy family mansion had turned into something that looked like a crime scene.
Daniel’s eyes moved from Grace’s uniform to the duffel bag on the floor, then to Eleanor inside the cage.
His expression hardened.
“Ma’am,” he said firmly to Vanessa, “step away from the cage.”
Vanessa lifted her chin. “This is private property.”
Daniel did not blink. “Not anymore.”
Grace reached for the padlock.
Daniel stepped closer. “Captain Miller, let us document it first.”
Grace’s entire body resisted the order.
Her mother was inches away.
Crying.
Shaking.
Calling her name.
But Grace forced herself to stop.
Because truth needed witnesses.
Because Vanessa could not be allowed to twist this later.
Officer Reeves began recording bodycam notes. Daniel photographed the lock, the cage, the bedding inside, the plastic cup on the floor, the tray of untouched food sitting just beyond Eleanor’s reach.
Vanessa’s panic turned sharp.
“You’re making this look worse than it is.”
Grace finally faced her.
“How does it look?”
Vanessa’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Eleanor clutched the bars. “She said nobody would believe me.”
Daniel looked at Vanessa. “Who said that?”
Eleanor pointed with one trembling finger.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with sudden fake tears. “She’s confused. She has episodes.”
Grace laughed once.
It was not loud.
It was worse than loud.
It made everyone in the courtyard go still.
“My mother remembered every birthday I had while I was overseas,” Grace said. “She remembered the name of every soldier in my unit. She remembered to send cookies to men she’d never met because she said nobody should serve without being mothered a little.”
Her voice dropped.
“She is not confused.”
Daniel knelt near the cage, softening his voice. “Mrs. Miller, are you hurt?”
Eleanor shook her head, though her whole body said otherwise.
“I just want out,” she whispered.
Grace looked at Daniel.
He nodded once.
Officer Reeves cut the lock.

The metal gave with a sharp snap.
And Grace opened the cage door.
