Chapter 1 - THE CHILD BENEATH THE TRASH BAGS

I saw Lily’s silver bracelet before I saw her face.

It was caught beneath the lid of the blue commercial dumpster behind my parents’ Naperville home, the tiny heart charm resting against a black trash bag. My four-year-old daughter had worn it to bed because she wanted to feel “fancy” on her birthday.

I climbed over the rim barefoot.

“Lily!”

She was curled beneath paper plates and discarded decorations, still wearing her pink pajamas. One shoe was missing. Her skin felt cold, but her cheeks were flushed. When I lifted her, her head rolled against my shoulder.

Marcus jumped into the dumpster beside me and checked her breathing.

“She’s alive. Give her to me.”

We carried her across the gravel toward the porch, where pink balloons floated behind my family like decorations from someone else’s life.

My mother, Diane, stood beside the steps in a pale blouse. My sister Vanessa remained near the back door, dressed for a party that was supposed to celebrate my engagement and Lily’s fourth birthday.

“What did you give her?” I screamed.

Diane drew back as if my volume were the offense.

“Enough to stop her from ruining Emma’s party.”

Vanessa froze.

My niece Emma stood behind her in a glittering dress and plastic tiara, unnaturally quiet.

Marcus cradled Lily while I pressed two fingers beneath her jaw. Her breaths were thin and uneven.

“She can barely breathe,” I said. “You drugged a four-year-old and put her in the trash.”

“She was supposed to sleep in the mudroom,” my father, Thomas, said. “Your mother panicked when guests started arriving.”

Marcus called 911.

“Nobody leaves until the police see this.”

Vanessa stepped backward. A prescription bottle slipped from her cardigan pocket and struck the porch.

The label had been torn through the patient’s name, but one word remained visible.

Clonidine.

Diane looked at Vanessa.

“You stupid girl.”

I picked up the bottle.

This was not allergy medicine, and it had not been prescribed for Lily.

Behind Vanessa, Emma swayed beneath her birthday tiara as if staying upright required effort.
