Chapter 1 - THE DINNER THAT NEVER STARTED

Rachel Mercer had already told Linda and Robert not to come.
She had sent the message at 4:18 that afternoon.
Please don’t come tonight. Daniel and I need to talk first.
Linda replied twelve minutes later.
We’re his parents. We’ll be there for his birthday.
So when the front door opened at seven and Daniel’s parents walked into the Mercer home in Franklin, Tennessee carrying a bakery box and a bottle of wine, Rachel knew they had ignored her deliberately.
She was standing beside the dining table with a large bowl of chicken soup in both hands.
Robert smiled uncertainly.
“Happy birthday dinner still happening?”
Rachel looked at Linda.
Linda removed her coat as though nothing were wrong.
“Where’s Daniel?”
Something inside Rachel snapped.
She crossed the distance between them and flung the soup directly into both their faces.
It was warm rather than scalding, but the force sent Linda stumbling backward.
Robert caught his wife by the shoulders.
“Rachel!”
“Get this trash out of my house.”
Her own voice sounded unfamiliar.
Linda wiped broth from her face.
“You’ve lost your mind.”
Rachel slammed the empty bowl onto the table.
“Now get out.”
The birthday cake sat untouched beside her.
Thirty-seven candles were still in their package.
Robert stepped between Rachel and Linda.
Then the front door opened again.
Daniel had gone to pick up ice ten minutes earlier.
He walked inside, saw his parents soaked in soup, and stopped.
“What happened?”
Linda pointed at Rachel.
“She attacked us.”
Daniel looked at his wife.
Rachel was breathing hard.
“You want to ask them why?”
“Rachel, what the hell did you do?”
“Ask your mother.”
Linda said, “She’s been looking for a reason to humiliate us for years.”
Rachel laughed.
That made Daniel angrier.
He moved toward her.
“Don’t.”
Rachel raised a hand.
Daniel swatted it aside and punched her once across the face.
The impact sent Rachel sideways into the armchair.
Robert shouted his son’s name.
Linda froze.
Daniel stood over Rachel, chest heaving.
“Just try touching them again.”
Rachel stared up at him.
Her lip tasted metallic.
The room suddenly felt very quiet.
Then something slipped from the pocket of her cream dress.
A small black envelope.
Linda saw it.
Her face changed.
Rachel noticed.
So did Daniel.
Rachel reached down.
Daniel got there first.
“Give me that.”
He opened the envelope.
Rachel stood slowly.
Daniel removed a single folded sheet.
His eyes moved across the page.
Suspicion disappeared first.
Then anger.
Then color.
By the time he reached the bottom, his face had gone pale.
Robert whispered, “Daniel?”
Daniel looked at his father.
Then at Linda.
Finally at Rachel.
“Where did you get this?”
Rachel pressed two fingers against her swelling cheek.
“Your desk.”
Daniel looked down again.
At the top of the page was a payoff confirmation for $164,382.17.
Underneath it were four words Rachel still did not understand.
