Chapter 6 - WHAT VANESSA REALLY WAS TO HIM

Vanessa was not just Adrian’s mistress.

That would have been simpler.

She was his strategist.

I learned that from the first meeting she agreed to attend through counsel.

Vanessa came with an attorney.

No silver dress.

No smug smile.

She looked tired.

Rebecca asked:

“When did your romantic relationship with Adrian begin?”

Vanessa’s attorney objected to phrasing.

Eventually:

Approximately four months earlier.

Her consulting relationship began eleven months earlier.

“Did you know Clara was pregnant?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know they were married?”

“Yes.”

“Did Adrian tell you Clara approved the family continuity plan?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“What exactly did he say?”

“He said Clara hated dealing with legal and financial details and wanted him to handle it.”

That was almost funny.

I handled corporate strategy for a living.

“Did that sound believable?”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Not after I met you.”

“When did you meet me?”

“Properly? At the charity dinner in May.”

Six months earlier.

“And you continued?”

“Yes.”

There was no excuse in her voice.

Good.

Then came the money.

Vanessa knew Adrian had debt.

She knew Brooklyn was struggling.

She knew he expected help from Sebastian.

But she said she believed the help was agreed.

“Why would you assume my father was giving Adrian five million dollars?”

“Because Adrian showed me messages.”

Cropped messages.

Again.

Dad to Adrian:

We'll take care of Clara and the baby. Don't worry about money right now. Focus on her health.

Adrian presented that as proof of an upcoming funding plan.

Dad had sent it after I was hospitalized for dehydration during my second trimester.

It meant:

Stop stressing my pregnant daughter about money.

Not:

Here is five million dollars.

Vanessa knew that now.

At the time, she chose the version that benefited her consulting work.

That did not make her innocent.

Then I asked:

“Why were you sitting in my chair that night?”

Her face changed.

Adrian had told her our marriage was effectively over.

“He said you were staying until after delivery for appearances.”

I almost laughed.

“And the postnup?”

“He said it was part of the separation.”

There it was.

Adrian was telling Vanessa one future and me another.

To Vanessa:

Clara is leaving.

To me:

You are financially disloyal if you don't merge everything.

To Patricia-like financiers and lenders:

Family capital is coming.

To Dad:

I’m taking care of Clara.

Different realities.

All centered on whatever Adrian needed in that room.

Then Vanessa said something I did not expect.

“He told me the baby would eventually live with him.”

I stared.

“What?”

“He said your work made you unsuitable for primary custody.”

My hands went cold.

Our daughter was not born.

Adrian had already begun telling his mistress I would become the secondary parent.

That was the first moment the financial betrayal became something darker.

Not because he could simply take my baby.

May you like

He could not.

Because he was already constructing the story he planned to tell if I resisted.
