Chapter 4 - The First Decision I Made as His Wife

My marriage lasted less than twelve hours before I called a lawyer.

Paige Turner had handled employment matters for Vanderbilt staff and knew Rachel through a nonprofit board.

By noon, I was sitting in her office wearing jeans, Rachel’s sweater, and yesterday’s bridal manicure.

Paige did not tell me whether to divorce Thatcher.

She asked practical questions.

Where had the confrontation happened?

Who saw it?

Had Thatcher blocked the door?

Did I have bruising?

Did I need medical care?

Was I afraid he would come looking for me?

“Yes,” I said to the last one.

Saying it out loud made something real.

Paige referred me to a family-law attorney in the same building and told me to document the injuries to my wrist.

She also recommended I make a police report while details were fresh.

“Loretta says I attacked him.”

“Her statement doesn’t erase yours.”

“He’s in the hospital.”

“Injury does not automatically tell you who initiated force.”

That mattered.

So did something less obvious.

The bedroom had no surveillance camera.

Good.

I did not want my safety to depend on a perfect video appearing at the perfect moment.

We had witnesses instead.

Harlon.

Loretta.

Rachel arrived afterward.

Hotel staff heard shouting from the hallway.

And the broken glass, locked door, bruised wrist, and medical timing existed whether anyone liked the story or not.

I made the report.

Then I went for a medical examination.

By late afternoon, my wrist was swelling.

No fracture.

Soft-tissue injury.

Bruising consistent with forceful gripping.

Thatcher texted while I waited.

I can forgive what you did if you stop this now.

I stared at the message.

Then another:

My parents are willing to keep this private.

And another:

You humiliated me in front of them.

Not one sentence asked whether I was hurt.

Paige had told me not to conduct an argument by text.

So I saved everything and answered only:

Communicate through counsel regarding legal matters.

Then Loretta called Rachel.

She didn’t call me.

“Tell Claire this is still fixable.”

Rachel put the phone on speaker.

“Fixable how?”

“Newlyweds fight.”

“Most newlyweds don’t end up in an ER because the groom tried to hit the bride.”

Loretta’s voice sharpened.

“You weren’t there.”

“Neither were you when it started.”

Loretta hung up.

That evening Harlon called again.

“I need to correct something I told you.”

“About Andrew?”

“About Thatcher.”

I sat down.

“What?”

“Your father never investigated Thatcher as an adult.”

“You already said that.”

“But someone did.”

Harlon gave me a name.

Megan Price.

Thatcher’s college girlfriend.

Then he said the part that changed the direction of everything.

“She came to Loretta and me after Thatcher hurt her.”

“How badly?”

May you like

Harlon’s silence was answer enough.

“And you still let me marry him.”
