CHAPTER 6

CHAPTER 6

Victoria Carter stared into her son’s phone like it was a courtroom.

For nearly ten seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan made the mistake that finished everything.

“Mom,” he snapped, “stop standing there and fix this.”

Something in Claire’s face collapsed.

My father looked at me, and I saw the question in his eyes.

Are you ready?

I nodded.

Daniel took the phone gently from my hand and saved the recording. Then he sent a copy to himself, to my backup email, and to the secure file he had created that morning.

Victoria watched every tap.

Her power was leaking out of the room one second at a time.

Ethan finally pushed himself upright.

“You think an annulment saves you?” he said to me. “You married me. You belong to this family now.”

My father moved forward.

“She belongs to herself.”

Ethan smirked.

“You don’t know what she signed.”

Daniel looked up.

“She signed nothing altered. And the original prenup protects her premarital assets, her income, and her right to leave in cases of coercion or threat.”

Ethan’s eyes cut to Victoria.

For the first time, mother and son looked at each other not as allies, but as people deciding whom to blame.

Victoria spoke first.

“You were told to wait.”

Ethan’s mouth opened.

Claire whispered, “There it is.”

Daniel’s eyes lifted.

“Mrs. Carter, would you like to clarify what he was told to wait for?”

Victoria froze.

Ethan realized too late what she had done.

The room went silent again, but this time it was not empty silence.

It was full of evidence.

Security escorted Ethan to the sitting room while Daniel called the police to make a formal report. Victoria tried to leave, but Claire stepped into the doorway.

“No more exits,” Claire said.

I thought Victoria might slap her.

Instead, she looked at her daughter with pure contempt.

“You were always weak.”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears, but she did not move.

“No,” she said. “I was scared. There’s a difference.”

When the police arrived, I gave my statement in my wedding dress.

I told them about the riding crop.

The phone.

The financial demands.

The forged prenup.

The threat behind every rule.

Ethan tried to interrupt from the other room until one officer told him to sit down and stop talking.

That small sentence almost made me laugh.

All night, Ethan had tried to teach me rules.

By sunrise, he was the one obeying them.

At 6:14 a.m., I signed the annulment petition.

At 6:22, Ethan refused.

At 6:25, Daniel placed the recording transcript in front of him.

At 6:31, Ethan signed.
