Chapter 1 - The Fifty-Cent Transfer

No one from Rachel Whitaker’s family came to Caleb’s surgery.

Not her mother.

Not her sister.

Not even a text before the anesthesiologist wheeled her seven-year-old son through the double doors at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

Three days later, while Caleb slept behind ICU glass under his dinosaur blanket, Patricia finally contacted her.

Send $5,000 today for Vanessa’s wedding dress or I’ll empty the account before Caleb leaves ICU.

Rachel read the message twice.

Then she sent fifty cents.

Memo:

Buy a veil.

She froze every family-linked account she could access.

Patricia arrived forty minutes later.

She marched down the pediatric ICU hallway in an expensive beige coat with Vanessa beside her and grabbed Rachel by the collar before Rachel had even set down her coffee.

“Your kid’s surgery isn’t ruining Vanessa’s wedding.”

Patricia shoved her backward into the ICU glass.

Coffee hit the floor.

Rachel caught herself before her head struck the wall.

Through the glass, Caleb slept peacefully, chest rising beneath the blanket.

Vanessa reached for Rachel’s phone.

Rachel twisted away and held it against her chest.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

Vanessa caught Rachel’s forearm and yanked.

“Five thousand today,” she hissed, “or Mom empties everything you have.”

Patricia snatched the phone.

Rachel seized her wrist with both hands before she could pull it away.

For one second, the three women stood locked together in the bright hospital hallway, all breathing hard, nurses watching from farther down the unit.

Rachel knocked Patricia’s hand aside, reclaimed the phone, and stepped between them and Caleb’s room.

“Too late,” she said. “I froze every account you can touch.”

Patricia’s confidence cracked.

She lunged again.

The phone rang.

Rachel recognized the number.

Bank manager.

She answered on speaker.

“Rachel,” said Martin Wells from Lakeview Community Bank, “the account they targeted wasn’t only yours.”

Vanessa’s face lost color.

Rachel looked toward Caleb.

Patricia moved faster than she had all evening.

She grabbed for the phone with both hands.

Vanessa caught her arm.

“Mom, stop.”

That frightened Rachel more than Patricia’s violence.

Vanessa knew what the bank was about to say.

Rachel jerked the phone away.

Martin inhaled on the other end.

“The transfer request also involved—”

The ICU nurse opened Caleb’s door behind Rachel.

And Patricia screamed, “Hang up.”
