Chapter 1 - THE GIRL BEHIND THE WALL

I found Lily feeding someone through her bedroom wall.

My four-year-old daughter was kneeling beside a loose wooden panel, pushing half a sandwich through a narrow opening.

“Lily… who are you feeding?”

She looked up at me like I had asked where she kept her crayons.

“The girl Mommy says you can never see.”

I stopped breathing.

Then a small hand appeared through the opening.

It grabbed the sandwich.

I crossed the room and ripped the panel open.

Behind it was not an unfinished wall.

It was a narrow concealed room built into the old house—a former reading nook hidden behind decorative paneling.

There was a mattress.

Blankets.

A stuffed rabbit.

Several children’s drawings taped to the wall.

And a little girl.

Maybe five.

Oversized gray sweater.

Bare feet.

Terrified eyes.

She recoiled from the sudden light.

I dropped to my knees.

“Hey. It’s okay.”

Footsteps exploded behind me.

Claire rushed into Lily’s bedroom.

She saw the open panel.

Her face emptied.

“RYAN, GET AWAY FROM HER!”

She shoved me hard.

I stumbled sideways.

Then she tried to reach the girl.

I stepped between them.

“What the hell is this?”

“Move.”

“No.”

Claire pushed at me again.

I shoved her backward just hard enough to stop her.

She hit the dresser and froze.

“You HID a child inside my house?”

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

Claire’s eyes darted toward the little girl.

Then she screamed:

“You were never supposed to remember her!”

Everything inside me stopped.

Remember?

Not meet.

Not recognize.

Remember.

I turned toward the child.

She had slowly crawled out of the hidden room.

Lily reached for her hand.

The two girls stood together.

I knelt several feet away.

“What’s your name, sweetheart?”

“Sophie.”

“Okay, Sophie.”

Her eyes stayed on my face.

Then she whispered one word.

“Daddy.”

The room went silent.

My chest tightened so violently I grabbed the edge of Lily’s bed.

Claire went white.

“What did you call me?”

Sophie looked frightened now.

“Daddy.”

Something flashed behind my eyes.

Yellow curtains.

A hospital bracelet.

A woman laughing while holding a newborn against her chest.

Then darkness.

I looked at Claire.

“What did you do?”

She couldn’t answer.

Sophie squeezed Lily’s hand.

“Mommy said you forgot me after what happened to my other mommy.”

My mouth went dry.

“Your other mommy?”

Sophie nodded.

Then she said the sentence that cracked something open inside my head.

“She said if you ever saw my face again… you’d remember who put her in the hospital.”

Claire took one step backward.

And suddenly I remembered a staircase.

A woman screaming.

Claire standing at the top.

And blood on my hands that I had spent five years believing came from my own car accident.
