Chapter 1 - The Two Fingers Pointing at Vanessa

Vanessa shoved Margaret’s wheelchair toward the staircase with both hands.

Then she let go.

The chair shot forward.

Margaret’s fingers locked around the armrests. Her mouth opened, but no sound came. The first wheels struck the edge of the stairs with a violent metallic crack.

Grace heard it from the foyer below.

She dropped the silver tray in her hands and ran.

By the time she reached the lower landing, the wheelchair had already slammed down several steps.

Grace threw herself against it.

Her shoulder struck the frame.

The chair stopped.

Margaret remained upright, trembling so badly Grace could feel it through the metal.

“I’ve got you,” Grace gasped.

The front door opened.

Daniel stepped inside.

Vanessa saw him.

Her face transformed.

She ran down the stairs screaming.

“She pushed your mother!”

Daniel saw his mother shaking.

Grace kneeling beside her.

The overturned tray.

The wheelchair crooked against the landing.

He did not ask a question.

He charged.

His foot struck Grace and knocked her backward.

“Get out of my house!”

Grace hit the floor.

“Daniel, no! I caught her!”

“You pushed her!”

“Vanessa did!”

Daniel stepped forward and slapped Grace across the face.

“Stop lying!”

Grace froze.

Vanessa stood behind him.

Quiet.

Almost satisfied.

Then small bare footsteps hammered across the foyer.

Lisa ran from the hallway.

She grabbed Grace’s uniform before Grace could leave.

The seven-year-old was crying without sound.

She pointed at Vanessa.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Then Lisa held both hands behind an imaginary wheelchair and violently shoved them forward.

Daniel stopped breathing.

“Lisa?”

She repeated it.

Push.

Stairs.

Vanessa.

Daniel turned toward his mother.

Margaret’s right hand trembled as she lifted it.

One finger extended.

Straight toward Vanessa.

The rage disappeared from Daniel’s face.

Something colder replaced it.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“She’s confused.”

Lisa shook her head violently.

Margaret pointed again.

Daniel looked from his daughter to his mother.

Then to Grace, whose cheek was already turning red from the blow he had given her.

Grace whispered, “I told you.”

Daniel’s face changed again.

This time with shame.

Vanessa took another step backward.

“You’re seriously going to believe a child and a woman who can’t even speak?”

Daniel looked at his wife.

He had heard Vanessa say cruel things before.

Nothing had ever sounded quite like that.

He moved between her and the staircase.

“Don’t touch either of them.”

Vanessa stared at him.

Daniel crouched beside Margaret.

“Mom, were you pushed?”

Margaret raised one trembling finger.

Pointed at Vanessa.

May you like

Then nodded.

And for the first time since his mother’s stroke, Daniel wondered how many things she had been trying to tell him that everyone had simply decided she could no longer say.
