Chapter 9 - The House Began Telling the Truth
Financial separation turned the Mercer marriage into paperwork.
Statements were requested.
Accounts categorized.
Debts compared against tax returns.
Dana’s attorney argued that many disputed transfers represented legitimate preparation for marital separation.
That explanation accounted for the short-term rentals and storage fees.
It did not account for everything.
The forensic accountant found that Dana had moved approximately $31,000 into the separate account before Brett ever confronted her about ClearSpace.
She had been preparing for something months earlier.
Then Brett’s attorney received copies of Dana’s canceled studio lease.
Attached was an email from Dana to the landlord dated February 6.
I’m restructuring my personal circumstances and need out as soon as possible.
February 6.
Two days later Brett had asked Colleen to stay at the house while he traveled to Dallas.
Colleen stared at the date.
Dana had already been making plans to leave.
Brett had already been afraid of her reactions.
Both had been living inside the same collapsing marriage.
Neither had told Colleen.
Then the criminal investigation created another problem.
Dana claimed Colleen had initiated the physical altercation by grabbing her arm during an argument.
Colleen had not.
There was no video.
No convenient camera pointed at the foyer.
Brett had witnessed only the ending.
Dana’s lawyer suggested the restraint had been a “reckless attempt to stop an escalating confrontation,” not premeditated abuse.
That claim bothered Colleen because of one detail.
The padded cuff had been beneath the staircase before the argument began.
Why?
Brett knew the answer.
He recognized the brand.
It came from ClearSpace’s old demonstration inventory.
Dana had once used padded restraints—not for people, but to secure heavy furniture during transport and installation.
The cuff had probably been sitting in storage with staging equipment.
That explained where it came from.
It did not explain why Dana had brought it into the house before Colleen found the mortgage notice.
Someone had to have put it under the stairs.
Deliberately.
Colleen called Brett.
“Your mother-in-law doesn’t accidentally end up with a chain waiting under the staircase.”
Brett went quiet.
