Chapter 10 - The Adoption Threat Was the Cruelest Part of the Plan
The full truth emerged during mediation because Meredith’s emails forced Rachel to stop minimizing.
No adoption had ever been scheduled.
No adoption attorney existed.
No court petition had been prepared.
No one could have lawfully arrived Monday and simply become Sophie’s parents.
The Monday plan was a handoff.
Linda would take Sophie to Louisville.
The existing caregiver authorization would help with routine school and medical matters while Daniel was told the arrangement was already underway.
Meredith and Scott would provide family support.
Linda had rented the apartment.
Rachel intended to tell Daniel only after Sophie was gone.
That alone was devastating.
But Daniel kept returning to one question.
“Then why tell Sophie she was being adopted?”
Rachel stared at the conference table.
Her attorney shifted beside her.
“Answer him,” he said quietly.
Rachel’s voice came out thin.
“Because she kept saying Daddy would come get her.”
Daniel felt something inside him go cold.
“So?”
“Linda said the transition had to be clean.”
Linda was not in the mediation.
This answer belonged to Rachel.
“She said if Sophie believed it was temporary, she’d refuse to leave.”
Daniel waited.
Rachel finally looked at him.
“So I told her you wanted Meredith and Scott to be her new parents.”
Daniel did not shout.
That surprised even him.
“You wanted her to believe I had chosen to give her away.”
Rachel started crying.
“I wanted her to stop fighting the move.”
“She was five.”
“I know.”
“No. You know the number. You didn’t understand what it meant.”
Rachel covered her face.
The major twist was worse than the fictional adoption itself.
Rachel had never believed Sophie would actually be adopted.
She had weaponized the concept because permanent rejection was more effective than temporary separation.
Linda knew Rachel was using frightening language.
She had objected once, according to their messages.
Then she allowed it because she believed Sophie’s distress would fade once she settled in Kentucky.
Three earlier details now made sense.
The packed suitcase contained only enough clothing for a short stay because Linda expected to buy the rest later.
There were no real adoption documents because adoption had never been the legal goal.
And Linda’s instant glance toward Rachel after Sophie’s revelation during the photoshoot had not been shock at a secret plan.
It had been terror that Rachel’s cruel method had just been exposed.
Daniel finally understood the exact betrayal.
Linda wanted control.
Rachel wanted relief.
Neither woman needed Sophie legally adopted.
They only needed Daniel to discover the separation after it had already happened.
Then they intended to argue that bringing her home would create more trauma than leaving her there.
They had planned to turn the damage they caused into the reason Daniel should accept it.
Daniel stood from the mediation table.
Claire looked up.
“Daniel?”
He faced Rachel.
“I spent weeks thinking the worst thing you did was try to remove my daughter.”
Rachel’s eyes were red.
He shook his head.
