Chapter 10 - the person corinne used to be

Dana came to my apartment with printed screenshots because she didn’t want another argument about who remembered what.

The messages were from five months earlier.

Elise had written:

He hasn’t hit me. I need you to understand that. But when he gets angry, he gets loud and follows the argument from room to room. I don’t want Maisie growing up around that.

Corinne replied:

Then you need a plan for where you can go if you need space.

Another message:

Don’t threaten separation during a fight. Do it when things are calm.

And another:

If you ever need me to keep Maisie while you take a night away, call me.

I stared at the pages.

For months, I had been looking for proof that Corinne had always been trying to destroy my marriage.

There it was.

Proof she hadn’t.

At least not at first.

“That’s the twist you weren’t ready for,” Dana said.

She was right.

Corinne had initially helped Elise.

Legitimately.

She had seen something in me I did not want to see.

The same anger my father used to excuse as “just Ryan blowing off steam.”

The same anger that made Elise plan conversations around my mood.

The same anger that erupted in the nursery when I struck Corinne.

Three earlier clues changed meaning at once.

Corinne knew Elise needed somewhere safe because Elise had told her.

She had the recording because Elise trusted her.

She was present the night Elise left because Elise wanted her there.

None of that excused what came afterward.

It made it worse.

Because Corinne had been given trust for the right reason.

Then she used it for the wrong one.

Dana showed me later messages.

Over time, Corinne’s tone changed.

When Elise said counseling seemed to be helping us, Corinne replied:

Don’t confuse one good week with change.

When Elise said I had apologized after an argument:

He always apologizes when he thinks he might lose control of the situation.

Some of that was fair.

Then came something else.

Elise:

I don’t want to leave him. I want things to get healthier.

Corinne:

Sometimes staying is the selfish choice.

A month later:

Maisie needs consistency more than she needs two parents under one roof.

Then, two weeks before Elise left:

If you go back again, don’t expect me to keep helping clean up the mess.

That was when help had become pressure.

Corinne had stopped supporting Elise’s choices.

She had begun steering them.

And when Elise refused to leave permanently, Corinne seemed to have made a decision of her own.

I called Elise.

“I saw the messages.”

She was quiet.

“I’m sorry you had to.”

“No. I needed to.”

Another pause.

Then I said the thing I should have understood from the beginning.

“Corinne didn’t invent the problems between us.”

“No.”

“But she learned how to use them.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the papers again.

If I wanted accountability from Corinne, I would have to stop defending myself long enough to tell the whole truth.

Even the part that made her original involvement reasonable.
