CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2 — THE STORY SHE HAD READY
Vanessa moved before Ethan could.
She stepped in front of him, blocking Daniel’s view with the calm confidence of a woman who had already prepared her lie.
“He fell,” she said. “He’s dramatic when he wants attention.”
Daniel did not look at her.
“Ethan,” he repeated. “Come here.”
The boy’s eyes flicked toward Vanessa first.
That tiny glance broke something in Daniel.
It was not the bruise on Ethan’s cheek that did it. It was not the broken bottle or the spilled cream or the shaking hands.
It was the way his son checked the room for permission before trusting his own father.
Daniel crouched slowly, keeping his voice steady.
“Buddy. You’re not in trouble.”
Ethan’s mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Vanessa laughed softly.
“See? He knows he did something wrong.”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“Stop talking.”
Two words.
Quiet enough that they barely crossed the room.
But Vanessa’s smile faded.
Ethan took one step forward, then another. His bare foot slid slightly on the cream, and Daniel reached for him carefully, not grabbing, not startling him.
“Your sleeve,” Daniel said.
Ethan swallowed.
Then he lifted it.
Red marks circled his small arm. Faint bruises showed where no child should ever have bruises.
Daniel stared.
His face did not twist. He did not shout. He did not explode.
That came later, maybe.
In that bathroom, he simply went still.
Vanessa rushed in with the next lie.
“Daniel, listen to me. He grabbed my bottle and dropped it. I caught him before he slipped. That’s all. You know how sensitive he is since his mother died.”
Ethan’s head dropped.
Daniel looked at his son.
“Is that what happened?”
The boy’s lips trembled.
Vanessa’s voice sharpened just enough.
“Ethan.”
Daniel stood.
“Do not say his name like that.”
Vanessa blinked.
For the first time since Daniel had married her, she looked uncertain.
Daniel turned back to Ethan.
“You can tell me the truth.”
Ethan wiped his face with the back of his hand.
“She said nobody would believe me,” he whispered.
The bathroom went silent.
Daniel felt every late night at the office hit him at once.
Every time Ethan said he wasn’t hungry.
Every time Vanessa said he was acting out.
Every time his son got quieter and Daniel mistook it for grief.
He looked at the broken glass bottle on the floor.
Then at Vanessa.
May you like
His voice dropped so low it almost did not sound like his own.
“Pack your things before I call the police.”
