Chapter 1 - The Food Margaret Threw Away

Margaret Mercer ripped the cracker packet from Noah’s hands before Elena understood what she was seeing.

Eight-year-old Noah reached after it.

“Grandma, please.”

Margaret dumped the crackers into the kitchen trash.

“You’re supposed to look weak.”

Elena stopped in the doorway.

Her son’s face changed the instant he saw her.

Not relief.

Fear.

As if he expected to be blamed for getting caught.

“Noah?”

He backed into Elena and wrapped both arms around her waist.

Margaret calmly brushed cracker crumbs from her pearl cardigan.

“She made me hide food,” Noah whispered.

Elena felt the words in her stomach.

“What?”

“When she comes over.”

Margaret reached for him.

Elena knocked her hand away.

“Don’t touch my son again.”

Margaret’s expression barely shifted.

Since Daniel’s death eighteen months earlier, Elena had tolerated too much from her mother-in-law.

Unannounced visits.

Criticism about Noah’s clothes.

Questions about Elena’s work schedule.

Margaret insisting eight-year-old boys needed “structure from a Mercer.”

Elena had called it grief.

Now Noah was gripping her so tightly his fingernails hurt.

Margaret opened her handbag.

She removed an old burgundy medical envelope.

“You’re being dramatic.”

“You just threw away his food.”

“I’m trying to help him.”

“By making him look weak?”

Margaret held the envelope up.

“You still don’t know who this was for.”

A faded photograph was clipped inside.

Elena snatched it.

She recognized Noah immediately.

He looked about five.

The picture had been taken at Margaret’s Wisconsin lake house.

Elena remembered the blue dinosaur swim trunks.

She turned the photograph over.

Nothing.

Then she noticed a small shoulder behind Noah.

Another child had been cropped almost completely from the frame.

Elena pulled the photograph free.

Margaret’s confidence vanished.

“No.”

Elena looked again.

A second boy stood behind Noah.

Older.

Thin.

Watching Margaret instead of the camera.

Elena knew that face.

She had seen it once in an old Christmas photograph before Margaret removed the frame from her hallway.

“Who is that?”

Margaret reached for the picture.

Elena pulled it away.

Noah whispered:

“Grandma called him the other bad eater.”

Elena slowly looked at Margaret.

“The other?”

Margaret went pale.

And Elena realized Noah wasn’t describing something Margaret had started with him.

He was describing something she had done before.
