Chapter 6 - MELISSA HAD BEEN RECORDING ME FOR MONTHSThe birthday video was not Melissa’s first recording.

We learned that because my niece Amy came forward.

Amy had been at the dinner.

She was the woman who kept looking down while Brian humiliated me.

She called Sarah crying.

“I knew something was off.”

Sarah put her on speaker.

Amy explained that Melissa had a private family chat excluding me.

Short videos appeared there occasionally.

Me standing in the kitchen asking where my coffee mug was.

Me searching the hallway table for my keys.

Me becoming irritated when Brian moved my mail.

Captions like:

Another Walter moment.

This is what we deal with every day.

He swears he’s fine.

I felt stripped naked.

The incidents themselves were ordinary.

The framing turned them into evidence.

Amy sent what she still had.

In one recording, I asked Brian three times where my property-tax bill was.

What the video did not show was why.

Brian had taken it to his office.

In another, I accused Melissa of moving my medication.

She laughed and told the camera:

“See?”

A later bank record showed she had picked up that exact prescription for me.

Maybe she genuinely forgot where she placed it.

Maybe not.

The problem was Melissa filmed my confusion but never the circumstances producing it.

Then Amy said:

“The birthday was different.”

“How?”

“Brian told Melissa to make sure she filmed dinner.”

My chest tightened.

“When?”

“Before you came downstairs.”

“Why?”

“He said you’d probably have another meltdown when he talked about money.”

Another meltdown.

Rachel asked:

“Had Walter had previous meltdowns?”

Amy hesitated.

“Arguments.”

About the cards.

The house.

Brian taking over the thermostat.

Melissa throwing away Carol’s old kitchen things without asking me.

I had raised my voice.

Once I knocked a stack of mail off the counter.

Brian called that episode number one.

My birthday was apparently supposed to become episode number whatever came next.

Then Amy told us something worse.

“Brian said if Walter got aggressive on camera, it would make everything easier.”

Sarah went still.

“Easier how?”

“I don’t know.”

But we did.

Guardianship.

Capacity.

Control.

The dog-food humiliation suddenly looked different.

Brian didn’t merely lose his temper and decide to insult me.

He chose my seventieth birthday.

A crowded table.

Relatives.

Melissa filming.

He shoved dog food in front of me and called me a freeloader.

Then took my dinner.

Then stood close enough for me to knock his hand away.

He wanted a reaction.

The video would begin with an old man lashing out.

If Melissa cut the beginning.

And Melissa had been editing context out of videos for months.

May you like

The humiliation was a trap.

The question was how far the plan went.
